Downtown Phoenix Art-House Cinema FilmBar Opens February 2, 2011
In 1981, the Palms Theater on Central Avenue closed, leaving downtown Phoenix vacant of any downtown single-screen movie theater.
That will change in early February as FilmBar, a digital cinema with a beer/wine/coffee/soda bar opens for business Thursday February 3, 2011 at the former location of Arizona Stamp and Engraving, 815 North 2nd Street, just two blocks South of “Roosevelt Row” and Phoenix’s authentic Arts District. The FilmBar venue will screen independent contemporary and classic art-house fare, including new indies, powerful documentaries, classic, cult and experimental films from filmmakers international, national and local. Programming will help fill the “niche” smaller independent films that have typically passed by the larger Valley multiplexes, as well as a nod to both classic fare and the stronger non-narrative directions of contemporary video artists.
Most films shown will screen multiple days and multiple times a day, with weekend matinees, a late-night feature every Friday and Saturday and “Mixed Bag Mondays”.
Unlike the typical art-space “sheet on a wall” approach, FilmBar will feature all the amenities of a major theater, including comfy theater seating and state of the art digital projection -- but on a more personal scale. FilmBar will also offer an adjoining bar/lounge, providing the perfect place to relax before and after watching a film.
The theater itself will be entered from a separate bar/lounge, serving a great selection of beers, wines, coffees and sodas in an atmosphere described by the owner as “Morocco meets Durant’s”. All drinks and snack foods can go into the theater area, though it’s also important to note that FilmBar will be 21 and over only.
Screening prices will range from $8.00 a seat for regular shows Tuesday-Sunday (special engagements with filmmakers will be higher) to $5.00 for “Mixed Bag Monday” repertory shows. Local filmmakers are encouraged to contact the FilmBar programmer to look over completed works for future screenings. The theater will also be available during the day for private rentals.
