I like udon better than ramen, but with the cold weather we've been having, I guess ramen would hit the spot. Sukiyaki would too. Total cold weather food.

downtown hotels are up to about 67% occupancy for the last quarter, so a significant rebound.

Hehe! I had read the end of this thread right before going out to dinner, and, well, I just got back from going out and having udon, spicy tuna rolls and salmon skin rolls. YUM.

I had my fair share of instant ramen as a college student; I hated the stuff, actually. Way too salty. Maybe that's why I don't like ramen that much? I associate it with the instant stuff or something? I still like udon better.

Isn't the stadium going to be used as convention space during the NFL off-season?

It's an event center, whatever that means. I do know that they are also going to expand on the convention center space. It says so on the official website.

I'm still not sure where the convention center expansion is supposed to be on Pico? Can someone draw a map if they know what's going on?

It looks to me like it's going to bridge Pico. That's as far as I can tell from the renderings, anyway.

The Gensler rendering shows it best, with the big boxy building next the current bridge, behind the stadium. Although now that I'm re-reading the Vision statement I'm not sure if that's the new West Hall or just the 90,000 sq ft expansion of the South Hall...

The more and more I look at the Gensler rendering for the stadium, the more I like it. I mean, it's a pretty unique design for a football stadium and it seems to fit in well w/ the rest of the LA Live campus.

From everything I've read, the stadium will be used as part of the convention space. Since it has a retractable roof, the grass can be covered w/ flooring and used as convention space.

Also, in the Gensler rendering, is that one of the new hotels shown at the corner of the parking structure just above the Nokia Theater (it has an AEG billboard on the side)? it looks like it's about a 10-story building with some rooftop entertainment space. And if you look closely, there is a pedestrian bridge connecting the stadium to the building.

So if I'm getting this right, it'll be built OVER Pico connecting to the existing convention space on the west side of it?

Is it obvious from this picture where the new convention space would be?

Yeah, it is that whole new block of building that's over Pico. I believe it is also the new building near the Nokia Theater/Plaza.

heck, yea, threehundred! your post is the next best thing to actually being there. I really like the part where you mention....

It was also refreshing to see more tourists running around the Historic Core. Many times I heard people say, 'Wow...I didn't know all of this was in downtown LA).
to make up for all those months you spent in AZ, & to help provide this forum with continuous reports like the one you just gave, would be nice if you eventually found an apt or loft in DT.

I shat myself when I saw the drawing for the Broad on latimes.com. After all of the recent discussions about bland, conservative architecture in DTLA after the stadium proposals, the Broad came as a very welcome surprise. Love it!

From the LA Times article:

Quote:
...

The unveiling of the design will also bring with it some encouraging news about the relationship between the building and the public realm. Broad is expected to announce Thursday that he is nearing an agreement with the Community Redevelopment Agency, developer Related Cos. and city officials to build a new public plaza wrapping the southern and western sides of the museum and to widen the sidewalks on both sides of Grand between 2nd and 4th streets. Those changes — just the sort I have pressed Broad to pursue, given the civic importance of the site — could help the museum avoid becoming another of Bunker Hill's aloof, self-contained architectural landmarks.

They also replaced all the windows. interesting that no one (Blogdowntown, Downtown News, LA Times, Curbed) has reported on this.

when you say the lobby looks almost complete, I'm assuming you mean the bldg doesn't look like the owner is merely preparing it for eventual renovation. If so, it really makes me wonder why the media hasn't given any details on what's going on there.

the embassy is another reason I sure would like to see Astani's proj south of the brockman bldg be under construction ASAP. the embassy right now suffers cuz it's surrounded by too many gaps, so filling in all the parking lots around it will give the old hotel more potential to tap into.

and when ralossi said the biltmore hotel's occupancy was as low as 20% not too long ago, the need to maximize the potential of the hood is nothing to take lightly.
