Photo update | December 17th 2010

The Georgia

Taken by SFUVancouver, December 17th, 2010.

Jameson House

A fairly crude panorama I stitched together from photos that were not intended to match up.

What's the low rise Sixties-looking building in the foreground of the photo? Can't say I've every really noticed it before. It almost looks like an apartment block.

602 West Hastings (SW Corner of Hastings and Seymour)

Office and Retail Building owned by Reliance Properties and the former original home of the Bank of Nova Scotia (it used to be a heritage building before a 60's reno.). The cornice and vertical supports were added in 2002 or so.

Thanks for the info. Found this public domain image in the VPL collection. Looks like an infill was built beside it in the 1950's, then the bank building remuddled to match the infill. Shame, the original was much more interesting.

Are you friggin kidding me?! The idiot responsible for deciding to cover up that building should be tarred and feathered. And if he is no longer alive, then he sould be exhumed from his grave and his corpse tarred and feathered.

God, I just hope the original facade still exists under all that — and can someday be restored.

Unbelievable!

Unfortunately, upon closer examination of the old photo and new photo, it appears likely that some of the original architecutral features (e.g. the protruding cornice) were dismantled to accommodate the new cladding. The vertical pillars splitting the original windows were definitely destroyed.

I cant' believe those bastards.

Indeed. Sad thing is there's a ton of old buildings around the city that have been covered up like that, on a smaller scale though...

That cracked me up.
I do agree though. What in the world would have possessed them to change that already beautiful exterior?

Perhaps some renovation or restoration was required and this was the cheaper method.

And to make it worse, to lose the original design to something of complete and utter anonymous banality. Given the age of the original structure, maybe we'll see it redeveloped with something taller and more interesting (he said hopefully).

That's what I've noticed, too. Pender Street in particular has a "bitty boxy" small-city feel. There are other streets of course. I'd love to see a complex covering en entire block - no, may even two -(lane closure problems, yes I know) with a couple of soaring, elegant dramatic towers on it.

I'll have to keep dreaming, I somehow think.

I'm sure it's been turned on for a while, but just yesterday I first noticed this building's light treatment. It's that new building on Granville at Nelson. Adds a bit more colour to Granville:

They've added a bunch more LED lighting to the columns of the viaducts by GM Place. I noticed blue, green, red, and yellow colour options. This is on the Northeast corner of the lot where that plaza is, near the ticket window and across from Costco/Skytrain
