I heard from another source that I-10 at McDonald Rd, which was to have seen a new Publix Distribution Center but due to the economic situation is delayed, Dollar General will begin construction on a 1.1 million sq ft facility at an estimated cost of $108 Million and employing potentially 600 people. Dollar General is expected to open over 275 stores in the western Florida panhandle, Southern Alabama, South Mississippi, and Southeastern Louisiana by mid 2012!

Does anyone know if this is true for the Mobile area ?

Also I if i`m not mistakin someone may have to corect me but I belive that Tillmans Corner will sson be incorporated into Mobile city limits becasue it is surrounded by Mobile now.With west Mobile and Theodore surrouinding Tillmans Corner it wil automatically become a part of the city under some sort of Alabama annexation law I believe.Tillmans Corner has a population of around 16,000 and to add that unincorporated area to the city would put us at round 218,000.

I wish, but I don't think that will happen. I've never heard of that law. Islands can exist but Tillmans Corner isn't surrounded by the city......just its eastern and northern borders.

That's an annexation scare tactic...If that were the case then most of the suburban municipalities of Birmingham would've been forced to be annexed into the City of Birmingham.

It passed through congress tonight. 1800 jobs and a large Austal expansion on the way. On an iPhone so I hope the link works.

WKRG last night claimed it was 2,000 jobs on site plus whatever the exponential effect is outside the gates. Awesome news for the area whatever the case.

BTW, did any of you also see the part about going ahead and extending the Foley express to the Interstate? Looks like that is going to start immediately at the expense of some other projects (for now). I wonder how that might affect future interstate concepts? Right before the economy tanked, I think they were doing some prelim land surveys in Eastern Baldwin County of how to route a spur from 65 down to where the Foley Express would hit I-10. Maybe that leg will happen in our lifetime with this addition. But do you like the idea that it might? Seems to me my area (NW Florida) benifits from the extra hurricane escapes as much as L.A. does...but you guys are the ones spending all the money to the west and north of us making the routes bigger as far as I know. Should we be flipping half the bill? If so, call my mother...I'm broke.

Regarding the previous page (I just read), my comments:

1) Get jobs (which generates wealth) and all the entertainment, luxuries of life will be beating a path to your door. There are night clubs, restaurants and artistic things forming downtown right now without government support from concept to creation with the news of the Austral contract....you just can't see the buildings/storefronts yet as they only exist in the entrepreneur's mind. Bring in the wealth...the rest will gladly chase those discretionary bucks.

2) As far as the area becoming more educated yet getting poorer...isn't that a description of the whole country basically (other than the many places, and people like me, who are also getting dumber)? I mean in purchasing power terms? The wealth is moving from here to other places and has been for a good, escalating while. It's simple math. Hard to imagine a primarily industrial US city getting richer in the latest US census outside economic anomaly. It makes perfect sense to me and has nothing to do with Mobile's great, and mostly successful, efforts to rise above it. That's just the state of this nation. Now D.C. may be getting richer...but that's not a sustainable concept worthy of modeling yourselves after.

At the risk of posting too many times, too quickly in your thread, here is a PNJ editorial suggesting that Congress passed legislation recently specifically because they knew EADS was going to win the tanker competition again and this was yet another way to combat that possible outcome that would horribly give too many Mobilians jobs and far too much money.

And now Congress says the parties received confidential information about each other's bids. If you are smart at this point you get the deal. EADS can not win. Will not win. Congress will make sure they can't. If tankers fall out of the air from old age and pilots die....it won't matter at this point. If we can't conduct war anymore...who cares. All that matters is Boeing wins.

Anyway...what to do with the Bay Bears? They can't pay the stadium rent and it is coming to a head. I was hoping we'd start a rivalry when the Pensa team started up in 2012. Don't let the Bears go broke before then. Let's get in a few games for bragging rights. Fun aside, it'd suck if that natural rivalry fell apart before it could start. That would boost both attendances. Save the Bay Bears!!!!

LOL no your ok dude it`s good to hear from our cousin city(P-cola) and I agree to your post.I think the Foley express from I-10 to the beach is a necessity.

The win for Austal is a win for TK as well. Come on tanker to your rightful place the Gulf Coast.

Also let me ask you a question (Muskavin) do you think there should me a megalopilis between Pensacola and Mobile.I think a good amount of people commute between the two.And not to mention Baldwin county commuters travel between the two as well. I guess im saying that Baldwin county is a connecter ?

I was down at Serda's when they dropped the moon pie. The crowd looked like it stretched down Royal from past St. Francis all the way to Conti Street. I had a great night!

The view from Serda's was a lot better than this video by al.com. Just thought I would share this.

I know Muskavin was asked the megalopolis question about Mobile and Pensacola but I wanted to chime in.....I think there will be one in about 10-20 years if the current trends remain the same. I read a book recently that talked about the unique relationship Mobile and Pensacola have had since they were founded. They were the only two colonies on the northern gulf coast weeks from other colonial possessions and months from Europe; they had to depend on each other because their mother countries neglected them both. At one time the French governor Bienville of Mobile honored the Spanish governor of P-cola at a party around 1705. We feed each other and protected each other for a time. When Bienville was ordered to attack P-cola and burn it he and his men didn't want to and tried to stop it but they had to do it anyways. I would like to think the two cities are moving into another phase of cooperation especially with economic development!

Great inpute and I agree but I hope it wil be sonner like 10 years.And great video as well.With out a doubt we threw the biggest part in the state.

Thanks for the history elb, had no idea of that. As far as absorbing into one, or however you want to put it, yes! That's exactly as it should be. Someone here posted a map of the US in, oh hell, I don't know 1836 or whatever...look back 100 pages. The original "State" Mobile and Pensacola were in was the same. And Enterprise, and Dothan and all the Gulf Coast. It made sense. We all think basically the same. It was a great boundry for commonality. Same needs, same culture, same thought processes, same styles, same accents, and on and on. Sure, ripe for different politics, but you get the point.

But ok, so it didn't become the Alafla state. So let's talk about Baldwin County. It's like the split between us both. Far more than 70% of those people are dependent on Mobile. Heck, most of those go to Mobile every day to work! Then there is the other 20% of Baldwin County. Basically, those are people who rely on Pensacola for work (Seminole, Lillian, etc). Then, of course, we have the beaches that link us all and we love to take taxes from...but for the most part...aren't really either Pensacola or Mobile.

All I'm saying is I'd be glad to join the Mobile Metro in a census or other study once we get past figuring out the "Baldwin Problem". LOL, just kidding. How it is that Pensa gets credited with all of Santa Rosa County in MSA studies baffles me. I think the census bureau is lazy. Baldwin should be 80% Mobile's population and Santa Rosa should be about 80% Pensacola. I'm not sure it matters in a great sense. But it might. Retail, Jet Liners, Tax Dollars, etc...they go for the places with populous. Mobile is about to grow huge!!! So yeah, I'd like Pensa to be a part of it even if we don't deserve any of it. We sure as hell don't fight for economic development the way Mobile does. I have no clue why people keep moving to the Pensacola area. I want to be a part of Mobile. A place that dreams hard and makes much of it happen!

I had wondered about the crowd size and this answers that question. I know the guy who did all of the planning from the city side so If y'all have any suggestions that I should mention to him please fire away. He (my friend) did explain that Bronner paid for much of the celebration and did pick to project the laser on the east side of the bank building so the Battle House guest could see it good. It looked like it was also the only logical place to project it. I am gone to suggest that we have a big bang or flash when the moon pie hits the bottom.
Since you guys are "empire building" types I would mention that Hattiesburg (home of my alma mater USM) is announcing a big company coming to town tomorrow. I hope some of it stills over our way. Check out the link.
