Just heard on the radio in Vancouver (news 1130) that London has declared a state of emergency for the upcoming 40cm predicted to fall within the next day or so.
As far as I know, London has not declared a state of emergency.
However parts of Middlesex county north and west of the city have, along with most, if not all of Lambton County.
Today is the 4th snow day this month. I think the City of London, Western and Fanshawe are acting like wusses. You just can't cancel services like this when snow falls... it's really bad economics.
At least the LTC had enough balls to go against the city and state they're running a normal schedule today. It will be slow, but that's what happens when there's snow. 🞵🞵🞵🞵 it up, it's better than nothing.
Environment Canada isn't good at providing information but I suspect this is about a 100-year snowfall event. Within the realm of possibility but beyond what most living residents can remember.

Call me crazy, but I'm actually contemplating about going to Westmount Mall today. Underground parking is a huge plus on days like this (most lots aren't cleared yet) and I doubt the mall will be busy. It might be a good way to get a bit of Christmas shopping done by using the handful of stores still operating there.
Sorry to say this, but this stranding could have been totally avoid.
402 needs CMS signs in both directions every 30-40 km along it's extent. First one should be right before Wonderland in the WB direction, one just before Hickory Drive in Strathroy, and one before the Watford exit. I actually would put one right in advance of Modeland road as well for weather/border delay reports as well. You could easily have it planned so the sign would show you delay time to cross the border.
Eastbound would be the same, just in advance of major interchanges that provide a spot for drivers to pull over and stop. Most major American states have these signs in the most quiet spots, and this can inform drivers of the conditions ahead, because we know it can be sunny in London, sunny in Sarnia, and right in between another storm like this.
Gates that can be shut would be a good addition at many interchanges along this corridor, and this is a prime reason why the province having jurisdiction along Highway 22/7 for example would be beneficial. Cops simply re-routed cars/vehicles off the 402 onto London Line. If that road is just as bad, they should shut down both and notify drivers on 402. That gives drivers a chance to stop and stay at a hotel in London/Strathroy/Wyoming/Sarnia if they are notified.
Same details could be applied to the 401 between London & Kitchener, and any other snow belts.
However, I will end this post by this: Great work on keeping all safe and sound and that this ended up as a great story.

Hope you need a cellphone or maybe some chocolates, because there isn't much left in the mall. I do suppose that with Sears, gifts can be had.

Just got a few stocking stuffers from da bulk barrel and the dollar store. Managed to find a gift at the Stokes... really surprised they're still in business! It's like the only store that's been there since I was a kid and hasn't moved.
Honestly, why did Fanshawe and Western close today? It was decent outside. Most local government services also shut today too.
Probably typical government over compensation. After being criticized by some last week for not shutting down some things fast enough they jump the 🞵🞵🞵 this week.

At first glance I had no idea why Fanshawe was closed yesterday, although one classmate told me they were able to get into the library (which you have to go into the "F" Building to access). Yesterday was a nice day.
But then again, after Fanshawe got caught with its pants down last Monday (see my earlier post) and students almost got stranded, who could blame them for taking precautions?

I was reading an article on Wednesday that said as of Wednesday the city had 122cm at the Airport where the official measurements are taken. The article said that the snowiest December in history was 1977 in which 135cm fell. So basically another snow squall or just typical snow the rest of month and we should have a new record.
I know someone who had to go to school for exams during the 1977 storm, and they got snowed in so the army had to rescue them!
In the same storm there was a group of employees at a warehouse in Westminster Township where the heat failed. They went outside, tied themselves together like a chain gang, and ventured through 3 feet of snow in open fields through what is now the northern part of the White Oaks subdivision. Nearly a day later they made it to their other warehouse and offices on Southdale Road where there was heat. They became snowed in at that location and had to survive on vending machine food for three days.

Why do people need to get all hyped up every time there is a mild snowstorm, and give it stupid nicknames, like Snowzilla, Snowmageddon, and my personal favourite, snOMG! I especially hate it when people reuse the same nickname again! Unless it's the kind of snowstorm we got in December, perhaps people could use a bit of discretion before panicking and freaking out! Just a thought.
