Most of this north face is in very close proximity and hidden behind the CIBC building (hence the firewall issue). Perhaps they just need to open up and add glass (even a mirror facade atop a firewall) to the top which extends above the CIBC roofline. I agree with the comment to pitch the north face too, effectively topping the building with a glass pyramid.

I think that that is likely the best that could be done. Don't see them getting rid of the concrete because of the fire issue, but even a fake glass curtain would be better visually than another blank wall.

There could be snow loading issues that have determined the design. But most likely the cause for the absence of the pitch roof on the north side is that is the mechanical penthouse and requires the height.

McCrea probably doesn't think very much of it. He joint ventured with standard life to do the same thing to the building that is currently proposed back in the early 90's.

McCrea owned the kelly building and the building the flower shop is in. McCrea planned to build the extension maintaining both facades of the heritage buildings, but in the end both parted ways as the project was met with oppostion from the heritage trust and couldn't be accomplished economically with tenants in place.

I have the drawings of the design. The glazing was maintained as it currently is and the roof was left as it is today.

Does the recent change in the heritage act impact this development? My understanding is they intended to demolish the existing heritage building and then rebuild it. If that is the case then the new act would mean they have to wait three years?

It was my impression that this rule was for when the owner insists on modification not permitted by the city. I don't think Waterside Centre for example technically counted as "demolition"...? When this development was discussed earlier it seemed like the demolition permit was happening in parallel with the normal approval process.

There was an article in the allnovascotia that stated that the construction start for the expansion would not commence till 2012 now. Guess they just recently submitted the final documents to HRM by design review committee.

I was poking around the Calgary threads tonight. I was looking at the Eighth Avenue Place and it reminded me of the TD building here as far as what it might become. I'm not exactly a fan of EAP just because I don't think enough lines were accented. I fear that the same could happen here on a shorter scale of course.

I drove by it today and it's looking okay. So long as they don't make the same construction mistakes (not securing stuff and damaging vehicles below). It's okay from a distance though; the lines are more pronounced. Be happy to take some pics if it can provide some reference?

That would be great. All the pictures I saw were close up. It probably looks better in person as well with more light.

This is my compressed work week; so I am off on Friday (added to that we had family day yesterday) so it's a nice short week. I can go grab a couple on Friday when I go get my coffee.

To resurrect the thread: I visited the offices of Lydon Lynch yesterday and they're currently cranking out their proposal documents for the TD Building to present to the city on Friday.

I didn't photograph the renderings or anything, but funnily enough it made me think of downtown Calgary too. Considerably different than what has been featured above though, I'd say it looks a little more similar to something like the Centennial Place towers than the Eight Ave. towers. IMO it'll look really sharp if they go ahead with it.

Thanks for the information. I have never been in Calgary (I have only flown over on a commercial jet) but I got the image below from the internet. Are these the Centennial Towers that you think the expanded TD Tower will look a bit like?

those towers are near "Eau Claire" around third ave SW just recently complete as was Eighth Avenue Place ,I do find that the expanded TD renderings look very simillar to "EAP" which I nlike more than the Bow building here.

Something like 8th Avenue Place (in Calgary) would have been more interesting in terms of the roofline.

Those are them, yes.

I'm a bit reluctant to pin a comparison to any one building, but a few people here have been referencing the Eighth Ave. buildings and from the renderings I saw the facade/curtain walls are noticeably more varied than those towers (which works fine for me, IMO the 8th Ave. towers look a little too monolithic). In any case, something about them definitely felt very much like something out of downtown Calgary.
