Metro Vancouver's Regional Growth Strategy draft report for November 12, 2010 is online: http://www.metrovancouver.org/PLANNING/DEVELOPMENT/STRATEGY/Pages/default.aspx

Not much has changed from the September draft regarding the UBC Line. Rapid transit for Surrey and Central Broadway are still equally priority #2. Rapid transit to UBC still does not have equal priority.

Quote:
September
a) staging rapid transit expansion (busways or rail), in the following priority corridors:

Priority 1:
• The Evergreen Line connecting Coquitlam Regional City Centre to Lougheed Municipal Town Centre

Priority 2:
• Connecting Surrey Metro Centre to one or more of the following Urban Centres south of the Fraser River: Fleetwood Municipal Town Centre, Guildford Municipal Town Centre, Newton Municipal Town Centre, and Langley Regional City Centre, and connecting the central Broadway area in the Metro Core to the existing rapid transit network serving the eastern and southern parts of the region.

November
a) staging rapid transit expansion (busways or rail), in the following priority corridors:

Priority 1:
• Connecting Lougheed Municipal Town Centre, Inlet Municipal Town Centre, and Coquitlam Regional City Centre.

Priority 2:
• Connecting Surrey Metro Centre to one or more of the following Urban Centres south of the Fraser River: Fleetwood Municipal Town Centre, Guildford Municipal Town Centre, Newton Municipal Town Centre, and Langley Regional City Centre;
• Connecting or extending the existing rapid transit network in the Broadway/Commercial Drive area to the Central Broadway area.
Quote:
(regarding transit to UBC)

September
In the longer term, these corridors may be considered for rapid transit expansion (busways or rail) after the implementation of rapid transit expansion Priority 1 and Priority 2.

November
Should TransLink’s studies of options for extending rapid transit to the University of British Columbia through the Central Broadway area support advancing rapid transit west of the Central Broadway area, the timing of such an extension should not delay or compromise investments needed to meet Priority 1 and 2 objectives.

shame. I guess they really think that the students at UBC are insane or radical at wanting SkyTrain...

On the contrary I think the board's being radical for suggesting Surrey should get rapid transit so fast without a proper study or evaluation with BRT. =S

I am still going to maintain my stance that UBC is an extremely essential corridor that needs to be upgraded. The employment density is there, the potential for expansion is there. Why not build it? This would be extremely useful and provide a much needed redundancy in Skytrain.

Interesting:

I didn't realize that Langley was a Regional "City" Centre. That would put it high on the long term planning agenda.

Excuse me. I've said this before, but I'm going to repeat it: start the process going again by joing the Millenium Aline at VCC Clark >> to the Canada Line at Broadway City Hall. This will dynamize the project, and result in fewer dollars spent on endless planning, and hot air, and get the whole thing "on the move" again.

UBC is not a corridor. UBC is a destination.

The Broadway corridor is an important corridor. Whether it goes all the way out to UBC or not, something has to be done.

I think we understand it already. I don't want to sound rude, but I'm hoping I don't see these kinds of posts with no "real point" from you every again. There's no point in repeating the same thing every single week.

I don't understand how they can state 4 separate destinations, as a priority. They don't even know where to send it, how can it be THAT important?

When you paint giant brush strokes like that, All of South of Fraser is a higher priority than UBC, then it sounds somewhat accurate. BUT there is no way you can build all 3 lines in the near future. SO, while ALL of Surrey and Langley might seem like a higher priority than UBC, is any ONE of them higher? Is hitting Fleetwood and Langley with a single $2+ billion line more of a priority than Broadway and UBC at $3 billion?

And to further that, how can they put Central Broadway on the same level as Surrey? Is even just as far as Arbutus really JUST as important as extending skytrain all the way to Langley? How can all of South of Fraser be put at the same priority as even just a Commercial to City Hall extension?

Can't the people responsible for planning for the metro region actually RANK individual priorities, identify concerns, and request actions? What's next, are they going to Rank Breakfast just as much a priority as supper and desert?

It's like they are trying to appease every single person possible. Why not just give us all "Completed Satisfactorily" on our report cards?

Maybe a legal junkie can clarify something for me. My understanding is the regional plan calls for increased transit SOF as the priority after the evergreen line with the Broadway corridor as an equal priority.
What I'd like to know though is what would qualify to fulfill that requirement SOF? Would rapid bus be enough to say it's been met and then Translink could concentrate on the Broadway line?

Just one more reason NOT to do Streetcar. http://news.nationalpost.com/2010/11/19/breaking-cyclist-struck-and-killed-by-streetcar/

Skytrains don't hit cyclists.

If Streetcars had tow ropes for bicyclists to hitch a ride on, this guy probably would have been behind instead of in front of the streetcar

Everyone should attend one of these workshops and vouch for the skytrain option. The last thing this city needs is a sub-standard LRT line.
