^That's really great news. It will help save the city money, bring more workers downtown, and maybe give a little push to the multi-modal terminal.

Too bad Marcus said he's not going to be putting in any money on this. I like the idea, although I suspect some wont be thrilled with it. It'll be one of those things that people aren't into initially, but then after 20 years everyone will love it because it's part of the city. IF everything that it planned gets built, Atlanta is going to be a different place by 2013. Downtown will be awesome, it's already significantly better than it was when I first moved here 6 years ago.

I agree with the 2013 comment. And I agree that downtown is exceedingly better now than when I ALSO moved here 6 years ago.

Someone mentioned a few posts back that downtown is ghetto. Wrong. It's actually becoming fairly pleasant to walk around.

From Centennial Olympic Park to GSU and Castleberry Hill, the amount of change is unquestionable. And for those who think Atlanta has a downtown homeless problem, a trip to San Diego will set you straight. We've got it made.

After spending the weekend in Detroit, I would have to agree.

But my feelings towards an "Atlanta Eye" are generally negative. The successful examples of giant ferris wheels that come to mind - London, Singapore, Chicago - are all located on prominent, active waterfronts. They offer spectacular views of the cities that (aside from Chicago) aren't available in any other way. I just don't see the Atlanta one being spectacular enough to warrant visitation, particularly by non-tourists.

Plus I'm pretty into the skyline already, without a giant spinning wheel.

Ok so I was doing a little catching up on the Saporta Report, a local blog, and I have some beef. Here is the link to the blog:

Saporta Report

Her most recent entry details the annual Golden Shoe Awards hosted by PEDS to provide awareness about pedestrian stuff. It all sounds fine and dandy, but all the awards were given to stupid "DUH" studies and nothing tangible. Well I take that back, out of 7 awards, 1 was given to GSU for widening a sidewalk. The first award was given to the ARC for conducting a study to show that people walk to transit stops and from transit stops. DUH DUH DUH!!! They needed a study for that? And how much money did that study cost? There were 5 more studies that were equally dumb that received awards so read away for either a laugh or to make you angry.

She then has a few bla articles and a few good ones, so read through those.

Finally she talks about the new bond issuance to help fund the new Maynard Jackson International Terminal. I'm not being an angry white guy when I say that I'm tired of saying Hartsfield-Jackson Int'l Airport, and so I ask the question now: Now that Maynard Jackson is memorialized through a multi-billion dollar international terminal, can we drop the Jackson name off the airport just to make our lives easier? If not, he will have his name on the airport and the terminal and it just seems redundant. I don't know many figures that are able or even worthy to have their name on TWO great great entities such as these, let alone entities that are already related. Just saying.

Hey just looked out of my window and I noticed the crane attached to the old TBS tower that was assisting in the deconstruction was taken down. Now that it is lower do they have an alternate method for taking the rest down? Or are they done taking it down?

Only if he's going to be duct taped to the control tower.

I love the idea of an Eye for Atlanta. I know loads of people that have lived here for a lifetime and still love to go to the top of the Westin... I think an Eye would become equally as loved and would be a huge draw to tourists.

All we need now is a skyscraper with the office lights spelling out GO BIRDS (a la "GO BEARS" in Chi-Town) and we're well on our way
