Demolishion permits are posted on Capital Pointe's facebook page. Also their new presentation centre is now opened across the street at the old Don's Photo location. This project is a go!

Sooo, I'm watching "I Heart Regina" on SCN.
And I'm not sure why I'm watching it... hahah. It's really weird/boring (I hope no one takes personal offense to that. haha). It just caught my attention because of the name, I guess.

Anyone know what's up with this... film?

EDIT:
Still watching, and it's getting weirder. An old woman just licked a little boys face, who she had chained in her basement. Oh. And he just chopped her head off now and threw her in a fire, while she... err her head, was still talking (about drinking his blood). lol.

It is based off of a similar concept done for Paris I believe. I remember hearing about it on cbcradio... the music on the other stations sucked ok?

Anyway, it's something like 10-13 mini-films, some horror (like the one you described), some more normal, that take play in or around Regina, each directed by a different Regina director I think.

I noticed in the LP this weekend they had an add and it said 37 were sold. If that is the case they are past the 50% mark typically used to allow construction to proceed. I've had my doubts on this project but I guess we'll see come January.

Grasslands

Has anyone been out to grasslands lately? Just wondering if any of the new stores have opened up. I know they gone tons of buildings going up but last time I was out there it didn't look like any of the retailers had officially opened their doors.

I was there yesterday. Reitmans, Ricki's, Jones New York are all open. Urban Barn, Bulk Barn look almost ready. There are several more but the signs were not up yet.

Just the steel is up for Lowes.

Yup. I know exactly what you mean. I would be very disappointed if they just decide to cheap out and do a fixed roof or open air stadium... It would definitely be a major missed opportunity that will probably not present itself again for at least 50 years if not more (if we take into account the age of Taylor Field). May as well spend the money once and make it worth it.

see...you know what im trying to get at, if we can do this, we can possibly do more structures etc in a very modern form, thus trying to creat an attractive, city/province in Canada, they say this is the hottest spot here, the next Alberta, lots a resources so forth, so why not try hit the jackpot, this province is set to grow a lot faster, and become more attractive and wealthier, as well our Saskatchewan Roughriders are the most popular football team in Canada with fans from all over

No.

O'Donnell is becoming a councillor that I respect within the City of Regina and I'm happy to see that planning commission has recommended denial.

I believe that there should be some office development outside the downtown (e.g. office types uses in Cathedral such as lawyers, accountants, and other SMALL scale office type uses) however, developing what would essentially be a 12 storey office building in Harbour Landing is simply bad planning. Office use at that intensity belongs nowhere but in the downtown.

In comparison to many other Canadian cities, Regina has done a good job of limiting suburban office parks. Suburban office parks encourage single use zoning and discourage alternative forms of transportation.

You don't spend hundreds of thousands on a downtown plan and then start directing office development outside the core. You go down that path and you'll see downtown Regina lose a significant component of its function. We followed that path with downtown retail and we can see the impact.

Good for O'Donnell. He's proving to be one of the wiser individuals on council. Lets hope the rest of council follows his lead.

Agreed. I would however, support some offices in the Transportation hub, but that is more offices to serve the functions of the hub.

We definitely need to have a council that is geared to downtown development and making sure that office growth is suitably placed within the city.

To add on to your retail comment, there have been rumours of H&M coming to the city (I don't know how long those have been around), and the sad thing is, the rumous isn't for the store to be downtown, where they would really be well suited (i.e. maybe in the Scarth Pedestrian Mall), but instead the rumour is either East end or Harbour Landing area.

A few destination stores downtown like H&M or Lululemon (which we probably will never get because the Saskatoon store is blocking that possibility from what I hear) would do wonders for making downtown the retail hub it once was.

There's no vehicular traffic and little pedestrian traffic outside of office hours on Scarth Street. There is little hope in believing any retailer outside of a restaurant could ever really survive there. I love the pedestrian mall on Scarth Street, but it's not going to foster retail growth anytime soon. Hamilton Street has some promise, but we need to develop something that will generate more foot and vehicular traffic outside of office hours. Hmmm...what about a downtown cinema Regina? Oh yeah, you bulldozed the last couple downtown and refuse to work with developers to make that work and instead allow new cinema growth outside of the core. I can't wait until council approves a new cinema in Harbour Landing instead of the core.

@CCF: single use zoning is what pretty much every city in North America has been doing for the last hundred years. I wouldn't say suburban office parks encourage single use zoning. They are more a direct result of single use zoning and the not-in-my-backyard-anything-but-residential-beside-me-is-evil concept North American's have about planning. It's not the nimby's fault, really. They've been fed that bullshit for the last one hundred years.

"booms don't last forever" cuts both ways: It could be unhealthy to build-out to accomodate the boom cycle. Doing something easy now to meet the short term needs of a boom leaves something less-than-ideal after the bubble bursts.

Encouraging single use zoning, was perhaps the wrong statement, but what I meant to say is that this is the epitome of single use zoning. As I mentioned, for the most part, Regina has not been caught up in the suburban office park craze, and now is not the time to start.

No, not every use needs to be downtown. However, this is essentially a 12 storey office building and they will in fact be targeting the same type of tenants that would ideally be located downtown.

Growth for the sake of growth is not the way to develop. That sort of mentality is what got Calgary into the mess it's in. There needs to be actual planning involved and not left to the market to decide.

Again, congrats to O'Donnell for making the correct choice.
