yeah true but if surrey gets nothing but all its giant building be ovals that will look boring too. should be mixed up a bit more towers like city point and D'Corize(one of my personal favourte just wish it was bigger) should be made.

I love the Medical tower proposal. D'Corize is one of the ugliest new towers that has been built in the City, IMO. Different tastes I suppose.

I like the red brick on D'Corize's podium. Very nice, very distinctive.

Heh, I don't think there's anyone whose lived in North Surrey for years who doesn't know about this abortion of a development. The location isn't even that great, but yeah I doubt they'll ever find the type of tenant that they want.

Lol, has it been that long already? I remember driving past it right after it was completed and thought to myself, wow, that's a nice looking highschool. I can't believe it was originally going to be a mall?

Yeah it was always planned to be a mall but its major tanent was going to be T&T but they got tired of waiting when the first guy kept going bankrupt and went over to central.

Time for a Surrey stadium: Watts

Surrey's mayor says it's high time this city had a major stadium.

Surrey's mayor says it's unbelievable that a city this size doesn't have a large stadium to host major sporting events.

"A city of a half-a-million people needs a stadium," Mayor Dianne Watts said Thursday.

"We need partners from other levels of government and we're prepared to put it pretty much wherever it's required... I think it's absolutely outrageous we don't have such a facility," Watts said.

The South Surrey Big Kahuna Rams left Surrey last week, citing inadequate facilities in South Surrey Athletic Park, where they moved from Bear Creek Park in 2006.

A lack of a true stadium in South Surrey – complete with bleachers, locker rooms and other amenities – hastened the decision to move east to Langley, where the team will play at McLeod Park.

In order to recruit top players, the Rams need a better facility where they can draw bigger crowds, a team official said.

Watts said there were lengthy discussion with the Rams to bring them what they wanted in Surrey.

"It's unfortunate that they left. I know our staff had been trying to accommodate them," Watts said. "I'm sorry to see them go. I've actually got a meeting scheduled with the general manager of parks and our city manager around that."

She acknowledges more needs to be done for sport overall in this city.

"There's no doubt that we need additional facilities to accommodate all of the sporting groups," Watts said. "One of the things we're definitely looking at with our Build Surrey program is expanding a lot of the facilities."

And it's high time for a stadium, she said.

The cost of such facilities are usually borne through public-private partnerships or senior levels of government.

"We're looking at different partnerships and certainly we've got that up to the provincial government as well in terms of space like that," Watts said. "Certainly we're having those conversations – there's nothing concrete at the moment, but we're certainly having those conversations."

I still think a major 10,000 seat arena to replace the Pacific Coliseum would be a higher priority than a minor league football stadium.

If Watts wants a stadium: stop with the weekly self-victimization whining and go heavily into debt like Abbotsford

The provincial government shouldn't be involved with BC Place or the convention centre

The federal government shouldn't have given Toronto a free stadium for soccer

If you can't figure out a way for city residents to support a stadium, then don't even bother citing population figures of an arbitrarily delineated region.

Surrey does not have a population of 500,000, it's under 400,000. Furthermore, due to its current stage of development it might be more relevant to consider Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Guildford, Newton, North Surrey, and South Surrey as separate communities. They're as well connected to each other as Surrey is to North Delta, White Rock, and Langley which are formally separate cities. Conversely North Burnaby and East Vancouver are more closely connected, and could be considered a continuous market.

Building a stadium in any one part of Surrey does not mean it naturally can draw upon attendance from all of Surrey/South of Fraser/Lower Mainland/Canada/Earth/...

If Watts wants to talk about a travesty, how about a Mayor that continues to deflect responsibility and is more concerned about writing wish lists that aren't addressed to Santa Claus

Yea I never really liked the population argument Surrey always pulls. So what if Surrey might rival Vancouver’s population in the future? What does that mean? Not much other than Surrey has a large land area. Surrey is really just a bunch of communities amalgamated together. If we amalgamated all of BC except Vancouver to form one huge non-Vancouver conglomerate, all you’ve done is removed arbitrary boundary lines to amass a large population. With Vancouver now relatively insignificant population, maybe we should build a stadium or skytrain to all the communities of BC to service this huge population! Surrey needs to use reasons other than population to get services and infrastructure.

Brooklyn and Queens each have a larger population than Manhattan. So?

Please tell me you seriously dont actually believe there is less then 400,000 people in Surrey. If you seriously believe that I just want to know what the hell Surrey are you looking at. There is easily 400,000+ in Surrey these days.

Statistics Canada - 2006 Census - Surrey

2006: 394,976
2001: 347,820

It's 2010, and Surrey is probably a little above 400k now but that has not yet been measured. I consciously chose to cite the most recent measurement.

Watts and her council always and deliberately cite misleading population figures by borrowing the population of neighbouring cities.

She ought to be fined for misleading the public, maybe make her pay Abbotsford's interest payments on their arena... after all, the communities South of Fraser are indistinguishable... right? presto, 'Surrey' has a 7k seat stadium

unoffically, surrey has easily over 450,000 people living within Surrey. Countless occupied secondary suites that aren't accounted for.
