Dirt being flung around already.

Community gardens were gone last time I was by there a few weeks ago.

Dirt flung. Gardens Gone. But that's about it so far.

I'm not sure that you could really say excavation has started.

Agreed! They just cleared the garden and no activity since. I have a nice view of the land from half a block away.

That doesn't make any sense...you're saying the building height is 123m, but since its 17m above sea level its 140 m? Then, wouldn't the bow in Calgary be... oh I dunno, about 1500 metres?

I'm not stating the building should be listed as 140m, my post says it should be 123m. I am just claiming the 140m to stubborning state I wasn't wrong when I said 140m earlier.

The 140m is what is listed on the elevation drawings and someone mistakenly ran with it, when I checked to confirm I failed to account for the base elevation, hence all the confusion. The correct data is 123m and 41 levels.

Hmmmm
I wonder if they've found some contamination from when the site was a garage (long before it was Carlos 'n Buds)

The HST has given new construction a BIG HIT and most Developers are scrambling to soften the damage by renegotiating their current contracts.

OK people we are moving forward.
The construction crew at Karis Place has cleaned up their mess left on the Onni site and excavation can begin. They've moved a drilling rig and backhoe on site. BC Hydro was in yesterday removing transformers and rewiring the alley plus surveyors have marked all the sidewalks, roads and alley too. The large signage was also removed today and the sidewalk opened up to get at some water and gas valves. The first dig they did a couple of months back was to remove some contaminated soil left over from the old garage aka Carlos & Buds.

They have been working steadily and are approx. 4 stories deep at this time.
All the hoarding and trailers have been placed along Pacific street along with large billboards. I will get a pic tomorrow.

The title of this thread should be changed to add "u/c" or at the very least "approved" since some of you don't believe "construction" starts until a crane is up.

Fantastic shots. Thanks for posting.

I imagine you may have some mixed feelings about this project but you have, without a doubt, a perfect vantage point to document it's construction.

It will block a good chunk of the mountain and city view but not all of it. I'm on the 29th floor and have a spectacular 200 degree view from Seymour all the way around to City Hall. I moved in almost 10 years ago when there was nothing and was fully aware of all the developments planned. So having yet another tower built beside me is not an issue.
I was instrumental in increasing the height and thereby narrowing the tower by pointing out that the original design exceeded the maximum allowable floor plate presented in the Downtown South Development Guidelines.
Onni was receptive to adding 6 floors through redistribution but I was pushing for more height (a 500 ft tower) and a restaurant/cafe to replace Carlos & Buds on the Pacific frontage. Although the city wholeheartedly acknowledged their planning failure to create a proper streetwall along Pacific they viewed the Mark's 7 story podium as a correction. However they still denied the restaurant citing it's proximity to the planned 'Under the Bridge' retail node.
