Yes, its a Traction Power Substation.

Took a drive up 17th Ave tonight, and was pleased with the visible progress. At Sarcee they've got the forms for the cap on the piers on the west side of Sarcee in place, and they've set up the forms for the bottom of the piers on the east side. Tons of concrete work at 45th looks to be done or underway as well, couldn't see too much though as it was dark so will need to go that way in the daylight soon.

it's shotcrete with soil nails drilled into it. something we haven't done here in calgary before, more used on the westcoast...major pain in the a$$ to build!!

What are the advantages? Why is it common in Van and not here? I typically see the wood-panel shoring on excavated sites here.

The completed tunnel segment at 38th St SW is being covered over this afternoon. The street will be rebuilt and connected back to 17th Ave.

Soil conditions is the big difference.

And its not the first time its been used here, the Bow used a very similar system for its shoring. Its a lot less material intensive (no need to do massive amounts of piles), though costwise I don't know if its more or less then the more traditional wood and steel shoring we see here.

Here's some pictures I took today.

Sirocco Station

The long trench you can see is where the platform for the station will be.

Signal Control Facility on the NW corner of 17th Avenue and Sirocco Dr./Costello Blvd.

They have cut into the hill and excavated here. The walls are shotcrete and the orange marks you can see are anchor bolts, which are for the stability of the structure and the hill behind it.

They have strated cladding the traction substation at Christie Park Gate it gives you a good idea of what the exterior of what the parkade at 69th streetwill look like with the angular strapping
