Collision at traffic circle sends one to hospital

WINNIPEG - A Winnipeg man was taken to hospital Wednesday after a two-vehicle collision at one of the controversial traffic circles in River Heights.

Winnipeg police said a man, believed to be in his 50s or 60s, suffered upper-body injuries when his car collided with a pickup truck at Grosvenor Avenue and Waverley Street shortly after 9 a.m. He was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police said the collision is under investigation.

But Don McNeill, the driver of the pickup truck, slammed the city for installing the traffic circles.

"A child could look at that and say there is something wrong," McNeill said, gesturing towards the circle.

"It’s probably one step away from criminal."

McNeill said while waiting for emergency responders several area residents told him they believe the circles are dangerous and have been asking the city to take them out. He said the residents told him there had been another collision at the same intersection on Tuesday night, while emergency crews said they have been responding to collisions at traffic circles across the city.

A passerby, who didn’t wish to be named, said "what did they expect? There has been no education how to use them.

"This was only a matter of time."
