The media attention from across Canada about Nenshi is quite amazing. Lots of focus about him being muslim/vis. minority, but also how it is shattering stereotypes about the city - a positive by-product.

Good article from Toronto Star Urban Affairs critic Christopher Hume:

The Sun's reporting that this election is getting noticed internationally. I mentioned on CP, that McIver would have to go on a murderous rampage to get this type of coverage.

/forgot to mention, it looks like The Sun has deactivated the comment feature.

I wouldn't want anybody to be able to make significant changes to this city without somebody else able to exercise questioning and restraint (though not to the point of obstructionism.)
So you would vote for a candidate you believe in, but then try to limit his or her ability to achieve what you want them to do?

I think it's safe to say Nenshi's victory has become somewhat of a national phenom. Stories littered all over the globe, post, Toronto Star, CBC The National, Global National - everywhere.

And the full interview on One on One with Peter Mansbridge this weekend (i.e. the rest of the one excerpted on tonight's National).

I love this part:
Quote:
Much has been said in recent years about the shift of power — economic and political — to the West. Despite conventional wisdom, that has little to do with the misguided machinations of Prime Minister Stephen Harper or the grim reality of the tar sands. It’s because the largest city in Alberta, the Tory heartland, has the intelligence and courage to elect Nenshi.

Yes. Even a leader that appears fantastic is still a politician human and prone to go off the deep end, make mistakes, or even turn out to be an opportunistic lying thief. I wouldn't trust anyone with a carte blanche to run a city. I'm all for checks and balances in government.

Sign of how big this win is. "Nenshi" is now a top worldwide trending topic on twitter. And "Naheed" is also a top trend for Canada (along with "Mandel", so that may be a bit more expected). And even "#yycvote" (the Calgary election hashtag) is a top worldwide trend too, though with the supposed 15,000 tweets about the election since the weekend thats not surprising.

Never really considered this during the election process, but also been reading a bit of Richard Florida lately.

I think Naheed was certainly the most creative candidate, (didn't agree with all his policies, but he did put a lot of plans out there for debate) it appears as though he has the ability to set a tone that Calgary is a creative city. It's great in terms of helping attract new ideas, business and people.

Now there is a mayor that is just as dynamic and innovative as this city!

Exactly, I love the fact that he really wants Calgary to be a place that people want to come to for more than just the paycheque. All this media attention in light of him winning is already helping with that I think.

After talking with my Father today I'm almost sure that Nenshi would have received many more votes than he did, if the media actually paid attention to him. My Father voted for Higgins (the union he is in told people NOT to vote for McIver, and didn't bother actually endorsing anyone else), and he knew nothing about Nenshi. Why didn't he know anything about Nenshi? The Calgary Herald barely mentioned him, the TV barely mentioned him, and he had absolutely no idea who he was. He doesn't know how to work a computer very well, and he certainly isn't on Twitter.

However, after Nenshi won, he read the writeup in the Sun and thought "How could anyone vote for the others?!" - I'd be curious to know how many other people had the same thought (particularly older folks), once the media put his picture on the frontpage, and told you who he actually is. The alternative media strikes again~

Nenshi had a great interview yeasterday on the CBC drive home show. Actually, it was a number of call in and twitter questions. Quite good. He is so calm and collected when answering questions and doesn't have that typical "politician" tone or way of responding when he speaks. I hope that doesn't change.

One of the interesting things that he mentioned he wanted to consult the council on was the implementation of portfolios for the alderman. he siad it was an interesting concept that he wanted to get their feedback on. I think that could be a unique way of dealing with various areas of concern and empowering the council.

Did your dad miss the Sun's front page spread on Sunday where they endorsed him? Too bad if he did.

Even the Herald on Saturday I believe had a dissenting editorial on the day they endorsed McIver Called, if I recall, "Nenshi is the real voice of change" or something like that.

To be honest I think this worked in his favour. I don't think Higgins or (especially) McIver really took him as a serious threat until the very last week or so of the campaign.

Now, I'm not exactly sure what they could have done to slow the momentum, but I definitely think it helped Nenshi considerably to remain on the sidelines as far as his competitors were concerned. Considering some of the fear-mongering I received on my answering machine, I wouldn't have put attack ads past at least one of the other candidates.

I also think that without Higgins, McIver would have won this election hands down. So we do have something to thank her for at least.
