I didn't notice any Nenshi signs on my way to work not sure if they have already been taken down or if I was just blind. I go down edmonton trail into inglewood.

With all of the great things that have been happening to Calgary over the last two decades, the redneck label was the one thing people had that they could throw at Calgary. Now's it gone. sucks to be them

Nenshi has an army of volunteers. He was saying something like 700 people have volunteered for his campaign (I did my, albeit small, part). I don't think he would be hard pressed to find some enthusiastic volunteers with time on their hands to take down the signs.

you all seem to believe the mayor position in Calgary is an almighty position - Nenshi made a hell of a lot of promises...

Signs cost money, the more your people collect the less they have to buy for the next campaign.

Would you have said the same thing about McIver?

And a huge part of Nenshi's platform is working together with council to fix the previous divide.

Sounds like Kyle Fawcett is taking a page out of American politics. If the Right wing (Republicans) don't get their way, throw a little hatred and dessention out there! That's really low-ball.... They did the same thing in the US! He should be congradulated, and then you figure out how to work with the next Mayor!

TallDrinkofHorsePiss,

McIver and Nenshi's platform in the end was roughly the same give or take ... the key differences came down to personality, level of detail, and trust (linking mciver to the problem, not part of the solution)

So would you say McIVer made big promises...

I'll give you an example: Shoveling your own neighborhood. Not sure he could have delivered on that one due to simple legal issues surrounding the cities insurance policy....

So the McIVer thing, A-ok comparison, Perez Hilton, not so much.

Take your ball and go home.

When McIver was the front runner (ie: most of the campaign), I don't recall any McIver supporters saying "eh, it doesn't really matter if he wins, the mayor only has limited power anyway".

There's been plenty of discussion here in a civilized tone about other candidates who did not support Nenshi (Radley was one example off the top of my head), and they did not get "attacked" as you put it. So your paranoid "omg no one can say anything bad about Nenshi" is demonstrably FALSE.

You hit it on the head Freeweed. I was trying to make the point that the mayor is in fact an important part of council, and TDOW would probably say so if McIver won.

Is the mayor the only player on council? Of course not, but they do have an important leadership role and they are the only person who can legitimately say that a plurality of all calgarians voted for them.

And I do appreciate constructive dialogue. I have disagreed on many occasions with people such as Policy Wonk, Sir Humphrey, Ramsayfarian, Radyley and many more. But the discussion is always constructive and argument based. I just don't see the point of trolling (others do obviously). I am here to discuss issues, and perhaps get a better understanding of people's perspectives. In fact, I think my opinion of McIver has changed a bit over the election period. Although I don't think he would make a good mayor, he was a voice for fiscal conservatism (although I think he got carried away sometimes), which I see as a good balance to people like Druh Farrell, who I do see as a bit frivolous at times.

One, so the position of mayor is really no more important than any other Alderman, and therefore this thread really serves no purpose anymore. Nor did any of the media coverage last night.

Did I win the Internets?

Not that it really matters, but I wouldn't be surprised if that rumor was true. Might even be a positive.... almost all the gay men that I've worked with were fastidious workers with an innate sense of organization....traits one would probably welcome in a city administrator!

On topic, how close dos a race have to be for a mandatory recount? I'm just wondering if any of these races are going to be recounted or the scorecard is unofficially official.

The first item precludes discussion of any other. The City will be struggling under a massive financial burden for at least the next 3 years. It is the early 90's redux and most of the Twitter generation who proclaim support of so-called progressive candidates are too young to remember.

It doesn't matter (I've already lived in a city with a gay mayor, and contrary to the tea party wannabes of the day, we didn't all turn gay the next day). It would however dispel the "redneck Calgary" stereotype even more.

Let alone the concept of a gay muslim - this would blow a lot of people away. According to most folks I know, it's simply impossible. All muslims want to kill all gay people, or something like that (this is what came up in conversation earlier today).

I'm really waiting for rusty to chime in here.

...fixed it for ya, ....seeing Taylor in second this morning ruined my breakfast

...anyway, congrats to Mr. Nenshi, I hope he is able to follow through with many of his proposed initiatives, it will be an interesting time down at the Big Blue Box...

This city is so spoiled. A $120 tax increase to my household, applied across the city, would entirely squash this deficit. That's what, a cheap cup of coffee every week? Most every city/province/country is dealing with a large financial burden right now. Calgary's is far less on a per-capita basis than the province's, or Ottawa's.

Never mind the fact that we actually have someone willing to stand up to city bureaucracy finally (I hope!) instead of just funneling money into the police trough because fear wins votes. Not that I'm singling anyone out or anything.

I bet we could melt down the Peace Bridge for a few thousand in scrap as a start.

I'm curious, what's a ball-park property tax estimate on a 300k house in a middle-class area of Calgary these days?
