Corndogger is going to lose it.

From the cover of the Globe and Mail

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/nati...i-takes-calgarys-top-job/article1762765/

I like this quote from the article. Sums up what we already know.

Quote:
“Calgary is often misperceived. It's no longer a ranching and oil community only. It’s young, it’s vibrant, it’s cosmopolitan and global,”

Throw in Pincott, who has just retaken the lead after trailing for a while. Of course Corndogger probably is not pleased that the neck and neck challenger is a Liberal.

It is looking like the centre-left faction of council is going to maintain its narrow lead but it depends on the new members from Wards 4, 6, 12, and 14 who are (at least to me) still question marks.

To be perfectly honest I was hopeful he could win from the start, but wasn't actually convinced he had a real chance of actually taking it until about 2-3 weeks ago.

Many people on here played a part. I was proud to have help craft his platform and help stir up support from the politically engaged crowd on here. Getting people like us caring and pumping this candidate early in the race was THE necessary first step to legitimize him so that the wider electorate would take him seriously. As soon as people saw and heard Naheed's message everything just fell into place. A few seredipitous events like the Police Chief row were certainly turning points.

Really enjoyed the discussions about the chalk on the sidewalks earlier in the day. On election morning I noticed the "vote Nenshi" markings along 8th Street and near the 8th St LRT station and had a little chuckle. Then coming back from lunch and walking by the Sandman hotel there was a cab driver holding up a Nenshi pamphlet to me as I walked by (after flashing it at a bus that just drove by) and I gave him a knowing smile. Then walked home around 8 pm to catch the results and saw more Nenshi chalk talk along 10th Avenue just past Barb's campaign office. It is something I will never forget now. Just a sense of quiet confidence.

As a third generation Calgarian whose grandfather came here when the city was barely 30,000 people before oil being discovered at Turner Valley, heck even before the Stampede, and also having a mixed race son, this is a proud, proud day.

It would have great to have the poll-by-poll data available online like the province and the feds do for elections. Seeing which neighbourhoods were supporting what candidate would have made my night that much better.

Yeah, too bad. I was looking forward to your maps.

It looks like we're going to hit 52% turnout. 5 polls left, 51.7% turnout so far

I'll have to send some e-mails to the City Clerk's office and see what I can get. Probably will have to wait until everything is official.

Anyone know why some polling stations are taking so long? It's been hours since polls closed. they could have counted and recounted several times by now.

Well Demong in 14 is a PGIB candidate, so that ward has moved columns. MacLeod supports Plan It, so there does not appear to be a change there. I cannot get a great read on Pootmans in 6. Keating has some problematic points, namely his desire to disperse job centres, but is big on SELRT so who knows.

MacLeod in ward 4 is a giant mystery for me. Had never even heard her name before tonight.

Things are looking better for Farrell now - leading by 700 with 4 outstanding polls.

9,11 still very, very tight.

She says some really good things but yeah, I had only read her name in passing.

Check out this interview

http://calgarypolitics.com/2010/10/05/ward-4-interview-with-gael-macleod/

Here is her website

http://www.gaelmacleod.ca/

She is big on Plan It and foresees a future Calgary of similar geographic scope as today's with a number of additional LRT lines.

So it seems pretty good on that front but we will have to wait to see how she turns out.

I think Keating might be alright though, he seems really keen on learning things he hasnt had much experience with. Much better than a stick to his flawed — ideals that some candidates were

Keating is interesting guy from what I've been told, he's friends with my girlfriends dad and used to be principal at Chestermere when my girlfriend was there. Lives out in Shepard, so he's probably one of the more rural alderman to ever be on council (though I think he's more of an acreage guy then farm guy). That might also be a bit why he seems less pro-urban then others.
