I'm really proud of this city right now - not since '88 have I felt that this city has gotten it right like now. We voted for someone with ideas, not for color, religion or race. I also expect that more people gave a damn about this race than any other in a long time - that's a win too. I will sleep well tonight, for I feel we have voted for a better future for this city.

We do have Muslim MPs and MLAs. The US has at least one Muslim member of Congress. To state that those are not major political offices is a bit much. The distinction between legislative and executive might mean something but not that much. We have had a Sikh Premier/Federal Minister.

WOW unbelievable. Nenshi`s now officially Calgary`s mayor according to CTV. So happy, Calgary is definately the city of the future.

P.S. the Calgary forum is blowing up lol, 304 forumers on when i logged on. Most I`ve ever seen it for any city on this website.

There are several Muslim MPs, Rahim Jaffer was the first.

These are the two mayors I've been able to find.

There was a M. Afzal Khan who did a year as Lord Mayor of Manchester a few years back, but it's an honourary position, although he is on council.

Mohammed Hameeduddin is the mayor of the mostly-Jewish (!) Teaneck, NJ, (pop: 40K) but he was not directly elected by the public, rather by his fellow elected councilors.

So it's a big first at the mayoral level, from what I can see.

I actually think Ric will be missed a little bit; you need one tight-fisted bastard on Council. Not five, and not the head guy setting the tone, but you do need one bastard.

Global called Ward 1 for Hodges. 3 for Stevenson, 5 for Jones, 10 for Chabot (with 67% lead), 13 for Colley-Urquhart

I know the majority of people on this forum are Nenshi supporters, but lets also be proud that Calgarians actually voted. People took interest, were engaged, but most of all went out to the polls to support their candidate. Nenshi winning it, is just icing on the cake.

CBC, Global and Shaw have called it for Nenshi. I'm impressed and very proud of Calgary. While I didn't like McIvor's politics - I think his speach was from the heart - I give him that.

"Today Calgary is a different place than yesterday" - Nenshi; how true is that?

Do some of you remember being at his first real campaign speech back at Arts Central? It feels like so long ago, and we have worked so hard to make this day happen.

Farrell and Pincott are both in the lead again but both Ward 7 and 11 are really close. This will be a very late night.
