I'm enjoying the hundreds and hundreds of votes (likely to translate into thousands by the time the night is over) for candidates who have withdrawn. Nothing like an informed electorate to boost my confidence in the democratic process.

I assume votes like this are just discarded?

Another question: how close does it have to be before a recount is called? Anyone have any idea how long THAT would take in this city?

They count. The candidate would have had to declare they would not take the post of mayor if elected - to some effect like that.

They really have to speed up the alderman counts. We are approaching 1/3 of the mayoral results while some of the wards have to be well under 5%. Remember the mayor is one vote, just like everyone else on council. How the other fourteen line up will mean a great deal for the direction the city heads in.

Sigh. In ward 3 it's like there's been a total of 25 votes counted. WTF?

Update for Cochrane. Incumbent Mayor Truper McBride won, with J. Churchill, J. Toews, I. Davies, T. McFadden, I. Brooker, R. Watson taking council (most of which were the incumbent councillors). 39% turnout out there.
