Your employer is required by law to give you either 2 or 3 hours (I forgot which) to go and vote today. If they don't let you go, remind them that they are legally obliged to do so.

I am actually nervous and excited about this election. It's actually a wonderful feeling to have. I have been involved in political campaigns in the past but none of them have engaged me like this civic election.

Well, I think nenshi has it in the bag as far as the number of supporters, now we'll see how many of them are the type to think that "Like"ing a facebook page or posting a status update is 'making a difference'.

Voted at poll 803 (Killarney Elem. School) this morning.

-Had to remove my Nenshi button; no problem. Put it back on after.
-McIver and Mar signs outside the school.
-Some folks were at the wrong poll and had no clue.
-Poll clerks were cheery and helpful. (Let's see them at 8:00 )
-I was only in one line for a minute or so.
-Nenshi, Pashak and Cochrane got my votes.

Too bad you weren't an 802'er. You could have said hi to Mrs. Bigtime, she is working as a DRO at that station today.

You are allowed 3 hours withut getting any pay docked to vote:

http://www.qp.alberta.ca/574.cfm?page=l21.cfm&leg_type=Acts&isbncln=9780779751167&display=html

way down in article 58.

Quote:
Voting time for employees
58(1) An employee who is an elector shall, while the voting stations are open on election day, have 3 consecutive hours for the purpose of casting the employee’s vote.
(2) If the hours of the employee’s employment do not allow for 3 consecutive hours, the employee’s employer shall allow the employee any additional time for voting that is necessary to provide the employee the 3 consecutive hours, but the additional time for voting is to be granted at the convenience of the employer.
(3) No employer shall make any deduction from the pay of an employee nor impose on the employee or exact from the employee any penalty by reason of the employee’s absence from the employee’s work during the 3 consecutive hours or part of it.
(4) Subsections (1), (2) and (3) do not apply if the employer provides for the attendance of an employee who is an elector at a voting station while it is open during the hours of the employee’s employment with no deduction from the employee’s pay and without exacting any penalty.

I'm going to be on ShawTV tonight (oh, the celebrity) talking about the election and issues in the Beltline if any of you are interested in watching. I am going to be on sometime around 8:45pm.

In 2004 on Election Day, I was working a 12-hour shift from 8am to 8pm. I went home at 5pm and was able to vote before 8pm.

Unfortunately, won't be able to check out that ShawTV segment (or most of the election coverage for that matter) due to my location and television provider. Hopefully someone posts an excerpt or something.

Just voted and I have to say, that was very quick. There were a decent amount of people there, but it wasn't too bad, will probably be busier later tonight.

This is the one time I regret switching to Telus. Do you think it could get youtubed?

Employers only have to ensure that you have 3 consecutive hours to vote. The polls in Calgary are open until 8:00 PM, so the average employer just has to let you leave by 5:00 PM to comply. Only if your shift was, for example, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (the entire time the polls are open) would your employer have to grant you the full 3 consecutive hours off.

I thought so. Too bad I already voted, now I can't leave early.

Shane Keating is running for Alderman in Ward 12. I cringed when I read this in his brochure:
"Reduce congestion by encouraging businesses to relocate outside of the downtown core to new areas where their employees live, reducing the strain and cost on Calgary's infrastructure."

Thanks for posting that. So many people have this false impression that somehow dispersing jobs leads to less traffic and less congestion. Spatial mismatch (people living far from where they work) is not a product of only uni-centric cities, in fact it is typically worse in poly-centric cities.
