Montgomery officials say murals conflict with new campaign; paintings covered by new signs

For years, the murals on Dexter Avenue have told the stories of local businesspeople and biblical characters, with some of the images focusing on the end of time and the return of Christ.

But city officials said those murals conflict with the new image they are trying to create for Montgomery through a newly launched branding campaign. Large signs carrying the city's new thematic messages, such as "Give this building a fresh start" with an image of a fork holding leaves of lettuce and a tomato slice, were put up over some of the murals this week.

"We want to change the mind-set of dark and dingy and change it to a world of opportunity where your dreams for success can become a reality," said Deputy Mayor Jeff Downes on Friday, referring to the city's new slogan, "Capital of Dreams."

Colonial building under contract

The former Colonial BancGroup headquarters in east Montgomery is under contract, according to the listing broker.

John Stanley, owner of John Stanley and Associates, confirmed an offer has been made and accepted on the property, but he refused to discuss the sale price or identify the buyer. Stanley said he expected the buyer to use the building for office space, but would not say whether it would be leased space or not.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation took over the property following Colonial Bank’s failure last year. It offer the building to BB&T, which took over Colonial operations, but BB&T declined.

The FDIC then listed the building for $13.5 million.

Brew Pub closes but owner vows to reopen

The Montgomery Brewing Company -- better known as the Brew Pub -- a pioneer nighttime destination during downtown Montgomery's rebirth, has closed, but General Manager Chris Ellis vowed Monday that it will reopen with a new atmosphere.

For 15 years the Brew Pub had served up beers, bands and burgers, but while business boomed downtown in the Alley, the entertainment area full of bars and restaurants that opened during the past few years, it waned at the Brew Pub.

Ellis doesn't believe that's a coincidence. [...]

Airport upgrades almost ready

Improvements to the parking lot at Montgomery Regional Airport are being completed one at a time, just in time for the holiday rush.

In recent weeks, the airport has opened its cell phone waiting lane and new exit stations for the parking lot. The cell phone lane is an area for drivers to wait for arriving flights before picking up passengers.

Covered walkways to protect passengers during wet weather have been in place a little longer.

A taxi waiting area is almost complete, and all rental cars are parked in the same basic area.

A quarter century has passed since the curtains opened for the first show at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery. As the theater celebrates its "Silver Season," which began earlier this fall, Geoffrey Sherman, the theater's producing artistic director, wonders if the wonder of ASF will ever spread throughout its own community.

Just out of curiosity: how do we handle linking to articles on a site that will remove them in one month? The Montgomery Advertiser is notorious for having no archival system whatsoever...all of the previous links to their page are now dead.

One way around that is to only quote the lines from the article that you are most interested in regarding the subject you're interested in. It's not necessary to post an entire article. You can post a few lines, maybe a paragraph, but not the whole article.

And keeping in mind that only a few lines can be replicated for an article even if a few quotes are desired.

There is also the option of paraphrasing the article to report the gist of the content.
