What a terrible unit. I checked out all the floorplans on their website, and none of them have bathrooms that face a window. These are $2000 per square foot apartments, what a crappy deal. All the circulation space, and lack of glazing per square foot, makes me think that the tower is too fat for its own good. They should have slimed it down.

It doesn't have to be a special effects show, just something to brighten up the downtown core. A perfect example of of "doom and gloom" rules is the Georgia St. façade of the current VAG. In most other cities it would be light up dramatically, with the lions ablaze in floodlight.

That's just one example. Most of the downtown streets are gloomy and "ténèbreux" after dark. (look it up, you'll get it)!

many pacific rim cities and aus. ones got better lighting, even just al ight on the roof is sth to show off

That was one of the more serious losses that downtown has undergone. As you say, .... imagine. That building would have been the architectural "centrepiece" of downtown.

Oh well ... perhaps one day in the future an opportunity for a similar one will present itself ... somewhere downtown ......

I really don't understand the love for the original proposal. All that was presented to us was a solid-glass massing model and a misleading render. It was never going to be an actual crystal, guys. People are just projecting their fantasies on what would have ended up as a dated-looking glass box with some protruding doodads on top. The only reason for this stupidity is the extra height on Bing's version.

the georgia is starting to peak through in the numinous webcam: http://www.numinous.ca/Webcam%20Page.htm

if there's only 10 floors left, it doesn't look like it reach to the top of one wall from this angle

WRT the old proposal, the glass was silvery and quite reflective - Bing Thom's office at the north end of Burrard Bridge had a test sample of cladding erected for several years.

OMG it WASNT going to be an actual crystal?? foolish me. oh and if it wouldve ended up as a "dated-looking glass box with some protruding doodads on top", then what do you think the current one will end up as?? A DATED LOOKING GLASS BOX.

Considering Bing Thom's track record of sheer brilliance wherever he goes, I do agree that it's a shame his vision for the Hotel Georgia was never built.

Although a tenth of a meter shorter than Wall Center, the Georgia has more mass at the top. The skiny spire is what puts Wall over the top.
If the podium was not there it I believe the Georgia would stand out more from the street.

The current design is generic and boring, but it isn't dated. The Bing Thom version was positively PoMo for the first 12 floors with fake punched windows. That's pretty sums up Toronto's Trump tower. The urbanism would have been worse... the entire frontage taken up by a garage opening and 8 stories of above-ground parking. At best we'll get a shiny silvery version of Trump without the quarter-onion spire. And that's assuming some magically-ethereal glass sprinkled with silver dust...

The podium for Bing Thom's wasn't "punched" windows - it was a window or curtain wall with fritted glass defining the pattern of "windows". It would have looked like a flat glass window/curtain wall, not like Trump's stone and glass facade.

The present project does work much better (provides much more variation in materials and setbacks) at the podium level since it moved the parking underground.

Glass installation has started up again - a couple of pics - one from Saturday and one from today (the shadows are bad on the second shot). Plus a pic of the precast (ugly beige) around back - probably beige because it faces the old part of the hotel?

BTW - the last floor poured angled back into the site - so they have started the taper to the top.
I'm hoping in the end that Beasley won't block my view of the top of the Georgia.

Pic by me today - peeking up in behind TD Tower and Atelier:
