Progress continues steadily on this one. There must be a couple hundred glass panels in now. Here is a shot I took on August 1, 2010 showing the Convention Centre's massive crane in the distance. Taken by me from the Merlot Grill atop the Ottawa Marriott.

80 Conventions Booked for New Convention Centre
Josh Pringle
Tuesday, September 28, 2010

The new Ottawa Convention Centre is already generating a return on the $180 million investment.

Seven months before the new facility is scheduled to open, there are already 80 conventions booked.

The Convention Centre says the total monetary value of all goods and services produced as a result of meetings currently scheduled to take place at the Convention Centre rose to $129 million in June, up from a projected $63 million in June, 2009.

Employment is also expected to double from 12-hundred jobs to 24-hundred jobs as a result of the conventions.

Ten per cent of the 80 conventions booked are expected to attract delegates from outside of Canada.

OCC Chair Jim Durrell says the conventions booked to date will generate $65 million in tax revenues.

The new $180 million convention centre is scheduled to open next spring.
What a great thing this is turning out to be for our city. An architectural jewel, a new ability to attract large international conventions (including the NHL All Star Game), and it will likely be revenue positive for the city well within 5 years! If only all of our projects could be this successful....

It's the same team that wanted the Airport to be renovated, another successful project IMO.

Agreed. Our airport, as I've said again and again, is probably in the top 2 or 3 in Canada in terms of design, functionality, and overall architectural quality. There are a lot of new (and very large) airports in Canada, but ours seems the most cohesive and visually appealing. I love flying out of there....just need a few more places to fly to.

It's been a while since anyone has posted a photo so I thought I'd snap a pano. The glazing is almost complete. It is a sharp looking but I have to say that the crooked mullion lines on the odd triangles in the bottom right edge of the building really ruin the contours and purity of form of this building for me. Brings my rating from a 10 to an 8.5, close but no cigar.

Is it just me, or does it seem really dark?

Remember that there's nothing in there at this time. When the interior is completed I suspect it will brighten considerably. Think walls, paint, lights, etc.

That glass is really dirty (up close) and this thing still looks amazing! Can't wait until the interior is all lit up and finished and there's some nice landscaping and street interaction (hopefully) out front.

From the ground, its beautiful. Its too bad though, they didn't consider a more sleek topping.

Based on the latest pic, I am afraid I am asking for the first time "hit or miss?"

I wonder if they could extend the rooftop garden up to that level, with stairs to the rest of the complex' roof? I think that would be really cool and 100% fix what is looking like what might become an eyesore from above, tarnishing what is otherwise a spectacular building.

A high reflective roof will be installed to minimize the 'heat island' effect, which increases the temperature in urban settings and impacts climate as well as wildlife.

I think it looks pretty dynamite, and I agree with those of you that said it will only look better when the exterior is done, and work is happening inside with lights, drywall, paint, etc.

Here are some pics of the new, smaller crane going up at the convention centre and the older, bigger crane coming down. One of the guys working at the site said the old crane will be down by Monday and it took six trucks to bring in the new one. While I was taking the pictures they were removing the counterweights from the top of the old crane.

Today I did I run by the OCC and snapped some pics from my iPhone and stitched them together to make a panorama. The main crane is down now.

( 17 pictures from my iPhone stitched together using Autostitch )
