There is a lot of questions to ask pertaining to the capital program. Like the $8 million outdoor range, would it be more cost-effective to rent from a private company? Also, there is a $7 million driver training track. What is currently being used, what is the cost of maintaining it, and what other options are available?

It's a common sales technique; identify problem, quantify the pain, propose a solution.

Will be interesting to see if Nenshi leaves Barb Higgins in the dust here...

Not sure if his campaign team planned this, but, IMHO, this little CPS fiasco is going to propel Nenshi right up there.

With one move he was able to criticize McIver's inconsistency between what he says and how he votes, illustrate how current members of council don't do their homework (thus also attacking Connelly and Hawkesworth), reveal the CPS's (more specifically Hanson's) improper bullying tactics and involvement in politics and leave Higgins in the dust. From what Metro News is tweeting, Hansen is apologizing for his outburst.

So on the day that Nenshi demonstrates what is wrong with the city, Higgins fires her campaign manager and McIver has nothing to say. It was really a good day for Nenshi.

I think all Nenshi needs now is polling numbers that put him in or near 2nd place to get that final recognition of a candidate that has the ability to win out over the McIver (I recognize the name) vote.

So the choice is between Higgins (no plan, no transparency), McIver (didn't get anything accomplished in 9 years on council) and Nenshi (only guy with a fully fleshed out platform) and yet Nenshi is way behind? My god, Calgarians are such sheep politically - which of course explains why an idiot like Rob Anders can get elected in Calgary election after election but wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell anywhere else in the country. Calgary politics suck.

Nenshi is starting from a position of relative obscurity, particularly compared to a 3 term high-profile alderman and a broadcaster on the most watched newscast for 20 years. He's managed to clammer and crawl his way into the race out of a big mayoral field, most of whom are better known than he. Calgarians are showing that they're now catching on to Nenshi, so that's something.

Nah. Remember Alnoor went from 2% at the start of the writ period for 17% at the end. High single digits as of the last poll and gaining isn't the best place to be in for Nenshi, but it isn't anything to complain about.

Naheed should be in the mid teens by now, and with the number of private lawn signs they have out the door there is huge momentum. Within ten points of the front runner before thanksgiving weekend and he should win by 10%, barring any Bradley effect.

The voters vote for the options they are presented, it is never their fault if your candidate doesn't win. Complaining about the voter is the biggest problem with Alberta politics, because it is a huge cop out. People within the Alberta Liberals do it all the time - if only the voters were smarter, could see the error in their ways, etc - and it is wrong. With better policy choices anyone can get a shot - look at Decore in 93. Heck, look at the municipal 2001 election, where Liberals place 1 and 2, and the more left wing one won. State your position, argue it effectively, frame it in a way that relates to people and you're off to the races.

To be fair to Calgary, public opinion in Toronto's mayoral race is even more baffling (the frontrunner makes McIver look almost reasonable). Similar story for Ottawa '06 and from what I gather the current election. When it comes to municipal politics Canadians just don't seem terribly informed.

[Rant]Am I the only one completely irritated by the quantity of campaign signs polluting the streets?

I did a little count of Edgemont Blvd, from John Laurie to Edenwold Drive. I counted about 160 campaign signs along this road alone. I didn't count signs I saw off-shooting into other roads. 160. One hundred and sixty!!! On a stretch of road about 1.7km long. These weren't signs put up on people's lawns... there aren't any houses directly adjacent to the road. At least a quarter of these were for Higgins. And you could see little battles sign planters had with one another. Wherever there was a cluster of signs for McIver, the Higgins supporters put two signs in front of each McIver sign. (Nenshi, the forum favourite only had 3 signs on the entire stretch... one big one, and two small ones). A lot of them were also devoted to area aldermen, of course.

I'm all for campaign signs. They serve a purpose. And I fully support anyone who wants to put one on their lawn to support their candidate. Maybe this is par for the course, and I just never noticed it before. But, this really seems excessive to me.
