I wonder how many more will pull out today. I'd say Connelly and Stewart as well.

I think Nenshi's going to carry a lot of momentum in the next week or so as the number of candidates narrows.

Could be just a twitter rumour at this point... It wouldn't be the first one. FFWDWeekly said, "Kent Hehr drops out of race, impressed with Nenshi, not with McIver." And about 100 people have requoted it, I would like to see a media release...

Barb Higgins support for police services actually resonates most strongly with Kent Hehr's points campaign theme on police (beat cops etc.). I would be suprised if he would put his support behind Nenshi considering he has not released any platform ideas or crime and police services.

Nenshi's campaign chair was Hehr's provincial MLA campaign manager. And why pile on to Higgins - backing the person with the big mo has potential to make him king maker vs an 'also endorsed by'.

I agree. Crime is far from an issue in this city and our new mayor and council have other issues to handle first. Not saying that it should be ignored, or that police budgets should certainly be cut. The majority of people are always concerned with crime whether they live in the safest environment or the worst.

I apologize if it unduly derailed the conversation and am open to different discussion topics.

I know it is a priority for Calgarians due to polling (ranking in about the second or third place), and it's also a major component of the City of Calgary budget (13% of the overall capital budget compared to 18% for transportation), and I had thought that it was an issue that deserves attention.

One should understand that it's not that I don't like Nenshi, (I do), but I think his campaign could be enhanced by speaking to this issue. At some point, it won't be momentum he is concerned about and just general public knowledge about him, but will need to expand his moat. Crime is something that would bring in more women and seniors. e.g.: Today's Calgary Herald cited that women are nearly twice as concerned about crime and safety as men. A complete platform and detailed approach to crime and safety could bring in broader demographics even if there is no changes to funding.

Right now perhaps the easiest and biggest prize is the 44% of undecideds.

Considering we were sitting at undecideds around this level last cycle, there are a couple ways to read it:

with appealing options they will go to candidates, but last time around couldn't justify voting for Alnoor but didn't like Bronco so much
they are non-voters

I hope the answer for at least half is #1, not #2.

Nenshi has an upcoming policy release on crime and safety, arts/culture, social issues etc are others upcoming as well.

Nenshi has some of the best ideas, but he could easily lose the election because of them.

Unfortunately, joe/josephine voter don't always vote for the candidate with the best long-term outlook. **I vote on that kind of stuff,** but I did a poli-sci degree and spent considerable time studying politics. By the time I was done, I had no patience for most politicians due to their "lowest common denominator" tendencies towards populism. I've seen populism take many forms, throughout history, across regimes and borders.

That being said, Nenshi needs to be more electable. Crime is an important issue. It's a wedge issue. It's also possible to have a meaningful discussion on the crime issues facing our city without resorting to outright populist nonsense (exaggerating or denying the problem). That's where Nenshi needs to go.. in the centre of issues that generate an emotional response. He has the credibility to make it a worthwhile discussion.

Hehr drops from Calgary mayor race on deadline day

Hehr said he would not file nomination papers for the Oct. 18 election, noting that he has neither the money nor the support to mount a successful campaign.

Hehr also scored a disappointing 4.1 per cent in a poll released on the weekend, which weighed heavily in the decision.

He said that he is not endorsing any other candidate at this time.

The Liberal MLA, who was left a paraplegic at 22 following a shooting, plans to return to his full-time job in provincial politics.

Calgary Alderman Ric McIver, former CTV anchor Barb Higgins and business professor Naheed Nenshi are considered frontrunners in the mayor's race.

The current mayor, Dave Bronconnier, has decided not to run again.

Candidates for mayor, alderman and school trustee must present their paperwork and deposits this morning at city hall.

Candidates for mayor must submit a petition signed by 100 voters and a $500 deposit, while people running for the alderman and school trustee positions have slightly lower thresholds.

The city's returning officer, Barb Clifford, said her office had given out almost 200 information packages for prospective candidates since June. But with the deadline just hours away, they will see just how many of those actually materialize into official applications.

"It's always interesting to see who actually files papers of the many people who pick them up," she told CBC News.

However, Clifford said sometimes candidates fail to follow the correct election guidelines, which prevents them from running.

"We had several people who were short of signatures in 2007 and that was the first time that we had that situation," she said.

Once candidates submit their papers, they have 24 hours to withdraw.

A final list of candidates — those that will appear on the ballot next month — is expected to be posted Tuesday.
