from the article:
"Chaffetz says the airport would be a great spot for economic development."

That's exactly the reason. And the airport has been there much longer than any development in the area has, so its not like they didn't know it was there. The airport used to be completely surrounded by farms and fields, now its surrounded by development.
Salt Lake City seems to have plans to keep the airport growing. They won't be adding any new runways or anything major, but there will be new hangars and buildings added. Plus there currently is a wait to get a hangar there because they are all leased. And to add onto that, the Army National Guard has a presence there, they will have a say in the matter as well.
So I don't understand how Chaffetz thinks he can just "move" an airport. Move it where? The other airports in the area can't pick up the slack, they are all full too. And I don't see a new airport being built, that process would take 10+ years to get all the approval and assessments done and to aquire land, etc. Look how long it took St. George to get themselves a new airport.
Anyway, Chaffetz needs to think about his stupid ideas before he goes blabbing to the media. Even though he has little influence over the matter, he just labeled himself as an enemy to the aviation community and all the aviation advocacy organizations will step in to fight him.
