The problem is people expect the mayor to solve all the problems. We really shouldn't elect a mayor in our municipal governments, just elect ward members and like the Nunavut legislature, have them choose a mayor from amongst themselves by secret ballot, or do what Thunder Bay does, where the 12 councillors are ranked from most to least votes and each gets one month being deputy mayor (fills in when the mayor is unavailable). It isn't unusual to have multiple heads of state, Switzerland has 7. There is no reason to have an extra member elected and to pay them three times as much when they really aren't doing much more than anyone else on council.

That would probably require a change in municipal law though and like most things to which our politicians aspire, the province has to be involved but doesn't want to be so it doesn't get done.

And you're not going to get much of a platform from municipal politicians. It's basically just vote for whoever seems the most sane, which at this point is a sack of russet potatoes. And by a sack of russet potatoes, I don't mean Judy Wasylycia-Leis; I mean this actual sack of russet potatoes:

It's going to lower your taxes, but won't say how....

Ha ha ha ... clever .

Nevertheless , Judy does have a plan to lower our taxes . She's going to get union workers to call the cops for us and get volunteers to field police calls . I can't wait to see what she says next . I wish I could be there with a bucket of popcorn .

You don't think the political/media clout the Powerline founder has has nothing to do with its success?

I would also argue that crime went down as real estate values increased and new people moved in over the past 3-5 years--people that would call the city and police about crime and disorder anyway.

I am so lost with this election stuff. I've scoped the whole Election Winnipeg website and still don't know much about Katz/Judy's platforms, so far Rav Gill's impressed me the most (in the sense of his vision; he's young and a dreamer so obvs it meshes with what I'm diggin personally) but I have no idea if he's even in the running.

This is a confusing 🞵🞵🞵 thing.

If Thunder Bay's election is any indication, all you have to do to get people to support you is say "I will lower taxes!", "I will reduce the debt!", and "I will improve services!" one after the other, repeatedly, very loudly.

Now, whoever is doing that is retarded so don't vote for them. (Not that it will make a difference, since most voters are even more retarded and will vote for them.)

I'm pulling for Thunder Bay's version of the sack of russet potatoes--these cabbages:

What has me most excited about them is the fact that the red population is finally going to be represented.

Did you know that Judy Wasylycia-Leis, like every other one of us, shares 47% of her DNA with those cabbages?

That's less than half!

Winnipeg deserves better leadership than what we have, what we are about to get and what we have been getting for 40 years. Winnipeggers are getting the bottom of the barrel leadership options, which is really sad.

Why can't we get decent, more intelligent people wanting to run our city????

The people who could actually do a good job on city council already have good jobs elsewhere. To become mayor or worse, a councillor, would mean less pay, longer hours, and constantly being called place insult here. Who would want to do that? Only someone who was self serving and knew how to use the system to their benefit would waste their time with politics.

Visionaries?! Ask Sarah Thompson how far that gets you. She actually knows what to do and how to do it but no one will pay attention to her. She broke the number one rule in politics: She made sense.

I know that you are partially right, but how come other cities like Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto have more progressive people running their city? Clearly city council wouldn't get paid as much in the public sector their either, but yet somehow those cities managed to attract better people for the job than Winnipeg. I'll take the leaders of those cities any day over this 🞵🞵🞵🞵 that we are being force fed. And no wonder so many people don't care to vote anymore. Votes seem so wasted and pointless when you have to choose between feces over maggot covered corpses!

The people in those cities are more proud of their cities, and so they're more eager to run for council there. In cities like ours, city council is seen as a negative force and everyone is cynical about it.

And Toronto actually has pretty 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 leadership. The front runner is Rob Ford. I'll let you Google him and make your own decision on that piece of human waste.

The mayor's job would be easier if we had a Premier who was interested in truly revitalizing our city, as opposed to throwing a few breadcrumbs here and there, and stifling it's renewal. If only we had a hip, younger premier who would grab the bull by the horns, and work harder to transform our city.

But why don't we have competent leadership in this city/province? Why don't we have leaders who truly care about making this a better place instead of "throwing a few breadcrumbs here and there, and stifling it's renewal"? Why don't citizens of this province/city care about their home enough to want to fight to make a change, like the people of Alberta and BC? There must be some people out there who care enough to want to make a change and have the political leadership skills necessary to run. Where are they and why don't they care enough to run and give us the city/province we all want? I guess perhaps the sad reality is that very few people care enough about this city/province to want to make the changes necessary to make us a better, more competitive city that many people would kill to move to and live.

I care about this province, and i voted NDP. I'll probably vote NDP again. I'm not sure about Greg Selinger yet, but I don't know many people who would say that Gary Doer was not a competent leader. As for the city....well....Katz hasn't done all that bad, really.
