Or you can go with the new Sony a850 which cost about $350 less than the D700 and performs like the $8,000 Nikon d3x, plus you have the option of using CARL ZEISS lenses...check the specs on this bad boy

Errr, other than the resolution which is twice as large as I realistically need, that Sony doesn't perform anywhere near a d3x...in fact it doesn't even touch the D700.

D700: 5 FPS up to 8 FPS with battery grip
Sony: 3 FPS

D700: 51 point autofocus
Sony: 9 point autofocus, less than my D90's 11....

All other specs are pretty comparable, and other than that all I see is marketingspeak. "Creative Style supports your artistic vision" What does that even mean?

Plus, I'd have to replace all my lenses rather than two...and my speedlight, and my software....no thanks.

I'm sure it's a lovely camera, but I stay away from Sony, they have a tendency to lock down their electronics with their own proprietary formats. Betamax...minidisk anyone?

What do you guys think of the Canon G11? I am on the fence about a DSLR due to the size, and the kind of photography I do (which is mainly street/random), and the advantages of the size of a camera I can pocket are important to me.

G11 is a great and compact camera, but not not really pocketable though.

If pocket-ability is important I recommend the Panasonic LX5 instead. Not only is the lens wider than that of the G11, it is brighter also (F2.0 at wide angle vs F2.8). The LX5 also has an oversized multi-aspect ratio sensor, which I think is really cool. Not exactly a common feature...

The G11 is more for people like me, for whom pocket-ability is not a concern, and want cameras that have articulating LCD screens and a shit load of buttons and dials, just like cameras in the old days. Somehow the recently announced Nikon P7000 has even more dials than the G11. FIVE dials! That's just crazy, I love it. The average SLR only has two dials.

New sensor, full view viewfinder and double memory card. The D90 is a tough act to follow, but these seem like worthy improvements. It won't make me run out and buy a new camera any time soon, but I'm sure some people will.

A while back I bought LR3 online (as an upgrade from LR2), then my computer shit the bed.

I got my new CPU today, and would like to install Lightroom on it as well. This shouldn't be a problem, but since the key is only for the upgrade, do I have to have LR2 installed on this computer first? That would be a pain in the ass, because I bought a physical copy of that, which is on the other side of the country.

Does anybody know what I'm going to have to do here?

I dunno about LR, but if it is anything like software I have used you will need an older version installed for the upgrade to work. If you paid for it previously then you could install a pirated copy without guilt

i use a sony. its a good motor. with some zeiss lenses it would be really mean. and the prices are really good on sony. with sony you can also use sigma, tamron and minolta lenses.
