THE CANYONS — Years ago, they invented lifts that took care of the problem of gravity.

Then they figured out how to make snow.

Now they're moving mountains.

Ski resorts. You've got to hand it to them. They're not afraid to tackle the big stuff.

Today's specific example is The Canyons resort in Park City, where, as we speak, a flotilla of bulldozers, track hoes, dump trucks and other assorted earth-moving equipment is turning a south-sloping hillside into a north-sloping hillside.

By Thanksgiving, what used to be up will be down, and vice versa...

Officials anxiously await announcement about golf course at The Canyons

...Talisker is the owner of The Canyons. But for the golf course to be built several other property owners near the resort needed to transfer their land.

"We've gotten everything through escrow," Jasper said. "It's starting to come together and it is coming together in a way that will be an economic engine for the county."

Officials expect to unveil a map of the proposed golf course at a ceremony Sept. 21, Jasper said.

"We'll show how it's going to be laid out," he said.

Course designers have been hired by Talisker and the Resort Village Management Association, Jasper said.

"I think it's going to be a high-quality golf course," Jasper said about the public course. "The sense I have is that they have brought in people who really know what they are doing to help not only on the golf course, but they brought in some people who really have expertise in terms of realigning the chairlifts and the redesigning of The Canyons itself."...

The Canyons Resort is pioneering one of the biggest innovations in skier comfort since Gore Tex, a heated capsule that completely shields riders from the elements. The orange, Plexiglas bubble wraps up, from the footrests, over the safety bar, then behind the back of the bench.

Without the nuisance of piercing winds, it’s possible to enjoy the heated seat that charges for 7-seconds as it rounds the base of the terminal and reaches a temperature of about 55 degrees.

On a clear day, according to The Canyons communications coordinator, Hannah Bowling, “the views will be unmatched. It will feel like you’re in a pair of sunglasses.”

This added protection will also allow operators to raise the lift speed, moving riders from the Grand Summit Hotel to the mid-mountain Lookout Peak, then to the Sun Peak Lift, a change of 3,190 feet, in just nine-minutes. Increasing the lift speed inherently raises uphill lift-capacity; projections are as high as 47% more riders per hour.

The first of it’s kind in North America, this chairlift design originated in Austria and is expected to start a new trend at resorts around the nation, according to Bowling.

“It’s our goal to find the newest and most advanced technologies, this is just the start,” said Bowling.

Orlando, This is the only rendering I could find on this project. Pretty run of the mill apartment style.

So this morning I was in a meeting about the 2nd phase of expansion at Fashion Place Mall. Unfortunately I am not allowed to name specific names, but I did get a lot of good info. The biggest news is that they have signed a lease with a new "mini-anchor" which has been rumored to be looking at setting up shop at either Fashion Place or City Creek, and apparently Fashion Place has won. The new mall manager even mentioned that "it will be their first store in this market, and their only one for a while", so the plans for one at city creek might have fell through. They are currently tearing down the old Nordstrom's building on the west side of the mall to make way for the new mini-anchor and 17 additional store spaces (which are going to be mostly filled by retailers new to the SLC market.) The expansion is scheduled to take 15 months (ending in November 2011) and add 98,000 sq ft to the mall. They showed some basic renderings, which looked promising. There will be a new west entrance to the mall which will use a large glass wall like the one at Abravanel hall.

Thanks Nick for those updates, sounds like a very cool project. I haven't been to Fashion Place for a while now. It's time to pay a visit.

Any idea as to when the new mini-anchor will make an announcement?

Seems obvious to be H&M to me, but who knows. Also as far as the "it will be the only store in the market for a while" City Creek is not scheduled to open for another 18 months still, I call that "a while." So I wouldn't count whoever the mini-anchor is out of City Creek just yet.

Are still going to build a new Dillard's? Their current store is much worse looking than the old Nordstrom space was. This was the plan from a few years back:

I notice that last week awhile driving by the mall. There were some bulldozers outside of the old Nordstrom's building and I was wondering then if they were going to tear down the old store. Thanks for the update.

Its Crate & Barrel folks. I was at Fashion Place last week and took one look at the Memo they sent around to existing stores in the Mall (I was down helping train a new manager at our store down there) and could instantly tell from the rendering that it will be a Crate & Barrel store. Like Nick says, their stores are pretty architecturally unique. Having lived in Chicago (where Crate & Barrel is headquarted in a northern suburb) and then Arizona, I was instantly able to tell that's what they are building even though the rendering was missing the outside logo of the store. Just FYI.

Fashion Place can have Crate & Barrel, we've already seen renderings of the flagship "Brate & Carrel" store at City Creek Center.

I figured it was most likely going to be C&B. They've been toying with opening a store here for over a decade. It's about time.

The new dillard's and the parking garage have been dropped, for now. There is rumor of Dillard's expanding their first floor out into the mall to about where shapiro's and asian gifts are now. But that is just a rumor...
