There is supposed to be a new right in/right out intersection on boul. des Allumettières from boul. des Grives to give better access to the shopping complex there.

It was supposed to start this summer but I drove by there a few times recently and wasn't paying attention too much but didn't see anything jump out at me.

Also, the power centre on the north side of the 50 between St-Louis and La Gappe is getting more construction. They have just started work on a new Winners store there. After that the shopping centre will be virtually complete (I think). This power centre will be served by a Rapibus station and work is in progress on the Rapibus roadway, station and park and ride on the northeast part of the site.

Also, in the area (La Vérendrye/Montée Paiement) mentioned by cre47 above there is a condo development that has started right at this intersection at the bottom of the Montée Paiement hill (northeast quadrant). They have laid out the sewers, water and street grid. Looks like there will be at least a few buildings there.

The frame of the ER (or at least a big part of it) is now up. It appears as though it will be quite big, and will take up most of what used to be the hospital's front lawn, almost all the way to boulevard de l'Hôpital. (From what I saw quickly this weekend...)

The owner of the Cinéma 9 just west of there announced recently he would be expanding as well.

With everything in that vicinity now (for those who now the area), it would be a really good place for a hotel, although there already are a few hotels not that far away... Maybe that is what is preventing a new one from being built.

I for one would like to see some more retail and dining in the area, pedestrian-oriented of course.

Does anyone know what this new ikea will have out side of more stock.I have heard rumors of a massive resturant butts that is all i have heard.

The store will feature a new children’s play area, a larger 640-seat restaurant and more than 1,200 parking spaces. Ikea is also looking at possibly using rooftop solar panels to generate power.

Not much chance of pedestrian-oriented facilities in that area. Maloney Blvd is totally 100% car-oriented. The two small hotels on that strip area cater to small company meetings, weddings, and Quebec-oriented businessmen and lobbyists. A new arena on Maloney Blvd won't be any more useful to Gatineau's tourist trade than Scotiaplace is doing for downtown Ottawa.

The idea behind having the arena and a multi-use building right smack in downtown Hull was to resuscitate a pretty dead area (government workers don't stick around in the evening). Old downtown Hull, with the Brewery Creek setting and night-spots like the Les Brasseurs du Temps has great potential for a very rejuvenated entertainment area with restaurants, bars and theatres. A lively Hull would be an alternative to the Byward Market area and could increase the Ottawa tourist business by providing a Quebecois attraction to the dead-as-a-doornail street scene in Uptown Ottawa.
I hope that the Gatineau Cityhall boys straighten things up with their Provincial government. A multi-entertainment and arena building in downtown Hull just one minute away from the War Museum would be a great boost for the downtown scene of both cities.

I know they have their work cut out for them and I am not expecting any miracles, however I was thinking of something pedestrian-oriented for the locals, not necessarily for tourists.

As for the hotel business, there are government offices both federal and provincial in the area, a new sports complex and a performing arts centre, a college, etc. within a km or so. But maybe the existing hotels can keep up with demand. Who knows...

Cathedral Hill development. This is for the lots of land surrounding Christ Church Cathedral, ie Sparks, Bronson, Queen – most of a city block. DCA board met with proponent on July 21. Church proposes to demolish the 1960’s hall facing Sparks, and 2 houses facing Queen (but keeping and reusing the facades). They will keep Roper Hall, and the Archbishops residence facing west over Bronson. They propose a 20 storey condo tower running N/S through the block where the two houses are now; a new office building (low rise) where the 60’s Hall is; and a new office building of 20 floors on the existing church parking lot facing Sparks. Sparks may be dead ended at the Cathedral. Lots of underground parking, 200 year lease deal, preserved views for The Gardens condo but not others. Public meeting expected in the fall. Generally, we were pleased with the care and thought that went into the proposal.

Awesome!!!

I hadn't heard! That's one of my favourite theatres in the whole city. Are there any more details, i.e. number of extra screens, when work starts, etc.?

No specific info on when this will be happening unfortunately. The owner said that he intends to focus even more on non-Hollywood, repertory-type films (which I suspect - correct me if I am wrong though - is why you like Cinéma 9...)

Exactly. Things have changed for the better in the cultural landscape since Didier Farré opened this puppy.

He actually runs a decent little film festival every year, but except for francophones and the odd francophile, not many people on the Ottawa side have paid attention to it.

Not sure where else to put these shots. Here's an interesting angle of the repainting of Place de Ville Tower C that I took on August 1, 2010 and a bonus shot of Parliament. I am not a big fan of PDV, but this lighter brown colour actually doesn't look that bad. It's a big step up from the chipped and peeling look. I would love it if they put some kind of fins on top of the building that would hide the yellow mechanical room....it would also give a bit more height to Ottawa's highest

Update on Westboro United Church Development. The article below describes the community meeting. It’s amazing anything gets built at all in the community, I would have thought low rise office/residential and a music hall would have been an easy sell.
