speaking of the floorplate, this view makes it appear more massive than do others.

This tower is going to be a great edition. We may not be booming like Toronto but at least in this cycle Vancouver was able to erect its two tallest towers. (just wish we could get that third, you know which on that is)

its definitely going to be a looker. The Mark is another interesting one... they look sorta similar, based on the promotional renders. but yes that certain third tower would be a nice addition.

They're beautiful. Thank god for view cones

Back to the topic, HSBC is 100m - so half again as tall, AWVan's rendering looks pretty close. Will look way better with the fins, though. Good looking tower. Crazy how fast it surpassed Jameson House after lagging behind for so long.

Al thats ever so witty! But from his high vantage point in a building in the middle of downtown, the viewcones arent actually doing much. the georgia would look nice as a 200m true skyscraper. If only.

Vinyl Siding on the Mechanical Penthouse?

Does this look like vinyl siding on the mechanical penthouse? Maybe not actually vinyl, but appearances tell something different. It looks a bit out of place with the bricks and mortar look of the old hotel right now, but maybe they'll plant some virginia creeper to cover it up.

That is so true. One particular example is Howe Street around Pender. In the 1970s, they built several modern, smallish 12/15 floor office buildings that are rentable and not ugly, but people didn't have the foresight to designate that strip (among several others of course) for talls, never mind supertalls.
Wouldn't the North End of Howe Street, although narrow, be a New Yorkish canyon with a few 150m or 200m buildings along it? There are any number of such series of blocks downtown one could name. Even West Georgia has "bitty" buildings in the canyon part that detract from that "big city feeling." Maybe this will change if there is enough demand. Hope so.

Yeah, saw that siding going up this morning - you would have thought they would have matched the colour to the old structure, not the new one.
There probably will be planting around it - at least to screen it from the view of the people on the roof deck.

***

WRT Howe street, there are a number of parcels that could be consolidated mid-block in the block bounded by Howe, Dunsmuir, Hornby and Pender - if the alley were allowed to be closed off.

Great! The sooner the better - provided of course the demand is, or will be, there. Let's make downtown a REAL downtown.

Here's a Gimp'd version of ckkelley's image with an old rendering overlaid (sorry, its adapted from twilight lighting). It shows the Georgia will be to the top of this frame in its final height and cladding. Yup, it'll be nice.

Great, thanks!

Still dont care for the tower's design, but it really adds some nice density and height to a prominent location.

Nice - I doubt that the facade will have that purple tinge to it in real life (must be a twilight thing) - especially given the blue colour of the glass that's up on the Howe side of the podium.

Maybe ckkelly can take this shot at twilight so we can match up the correct coloring... ?

I know there were very solid, compelling business reasons for the property to change ownership, but I recall seeing the renderings for the original Georgia - a "crystal tower" type of building. I have to say that I was more inspired by that than by this one, but we have to make the most of it now - and give it a chance. C'est la vie.

There is a good comparison of before and after on this project (Bing Thom design versus what we have now) at PriceTags: http://pricetags.wordpress.com/2006/12/18/what-happened/
