If that's really a law then that is the most retarded law I've ever heard of. It's MINE camera, it's MINE picture. These stupid laws are pass because of these jerk private owners who have power trips.

I had similar issue in the past relative to photography of various structures. In 1999, I was on a photo spree in Bethesda, MD. I found a fairly modern 4-story building with an amazing facade and front entrance. A man wearing a suite identified himself as part of the security detail. Same situation happened to me. However I just went across the street and took the photo of the building from someone else's property.

I asked other photographers about my experience and what could be the reasons behind these type of laws; security reasons and an issue with architects copying the work of others were the common answers. Airports I can most definitely understand from a security stand point. When I go IAD for plane spotting, there are certain areas I cannot photograph. But if I took a pic of the main terminal, airplanes at the gates and aircraft movement, it was not a problem.

I remember my photography professer telling us something like that. But my memory is a little fuzzy, then again maybe he was full of it. Maybe jtrent77 is right, if its for commercial gain then permission has to be sought.

That's a poor excuse. If say Bin laden really wanted to get a hold of pictures of buildings that he wants to destroy then really ALL he has to do is go to Google and search for those buildings or layouts. Same goes with copy cat architects. My point is there is already 100's of pictures of these buildings online somewhere that anybody can look up. So really having one more person taking a picture of a building really doesn't make a difference. And there really is no harm in it.
Again it's all just total B.S.

wow, I didn't even know Questar has already broken ground. This is great. There are going to be some great projects up and down State Street. Also I spy a yellow crane base at the Harmon's site.
Now if we can just get the 10-story apartment building project started also on State as well then we really will be rolling.

Ballet West update

So, it looks like Ballet West will not be building there new building by the Capitol Theater for at least another one to two years. However, they are going to put a designed installation in that vacant space. See below:

http://www.aiautahyaf.org/linked/flu...%207-31-10.pdf

Btw, does anyone have any renderings of the proposed Ballet West building?

Trolley Square remodel complete; public invited to open house

Trolley Square remodel complete; public invited to open house
August 20th, 2010 @ 5:09pm
By Jed Boal
http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=12080430

SALT LAKE CITY -- Trolley Square enters a new era Saturday. The grand reopening will celebrate the end of exterior construction on the historic mall at 700 East between 500 South and 600 South in downtown Salt Lake City.

A number of activities will take place throughout the day to welcome the public.

The remodel includes two new parking lots and new stores. After three years of construction, Trolley Square business owners are excited about the face-lift. They had to battle both the bad economy and the ongoing construction -- but now it's over, and businesses are more than happy.

Saturday's events.

* 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Children's activities featuring Munchkin Radio
* 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Bounce house
* 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Event photo booth
* 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Community information and prize booths, including a Disney's Lion King family pack
* 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Cake on the plaza
* 11 a.m. - close
Restaurant specials, including 35% off orders at Spaghetti Factory in honor of their 35th anniversary
* 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Live comedy show with refreshments, presented by WiseGuys Comedy Club
* 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Horse drawn carriage rides depart from the water tower
* Dusk
Fireworks

This is kind of random, but do you think Trolley Square should have some kind of a memorial built for those five people who were shot and killed a few years back? I think it's something that should be looked into.

Odd Fellows Hall bid increases

The Salt Lake Tribune

Updated 6 hours ago Updated Aug 20, 2010 11:57PM
The highest bid made Friday for the historic Odd Fellows Hall in Salt Lake City jumped to $710,000.

There were several bids Friday, but that was the highest, said Sally Mayberry, the public affairs officer in the Rocky Mountain region for the U.S. General Services Administration. On Thursday, the high bid was $660,000.

The 119-year-old, three-story office building rests on the north side of Market Street between Main and West Temple streets. It was moved there from across the street last year to make room for a new federal courthouse just west of the Frank E. Moss U.S. Courthouse.

The federal government spent $6.5 million to move and spruce up the structure, which weighs 5 million pounds.

The auction will continue Monday.

So it looks like the Fed is not getting anywhere near the $6.5 million it put into the Odd Fellows building. So is the difference added to the cost of the new courthouse? Is the OF building a bargain or a boondoggle?

That's how tall it was in the rendering. Technically we don't know anything, they could just not build it.

I'm kind of shock people are really to pay that much for basically just a shell. The owner will STILL have to put in millions to renovate the insides.

I wonder how much really needs to be done to the inside. From the ground level, looking inside, you can see walls, floor, ceiling, light fixtures, etc. It doesn't appear to be a shell from there. Maybe there was just one room left intact.

Yea maybe. I just remember hearing on the news that who ever ends up buying the building will have to put at least a million towards fixing up the inside. So with that said it makes me wonder why would anybody pay over 700K when there is so much work still yet to do. The guy who bid only 350K had the right idea.

I don't know that Ballet West has had any design work done yet for the site adjacent to the Capitol Theater. I vaguely recall a rendering for the abandoned site on Wilmington Ave in Sugarhouse. If Ballet West can get this built in two years, I'll be ecstatic. The outlook for arts organizations and local governments is pretty grim right now. I really wonder if anything will happen on the broadway-style theater on Main Street any time soon. I don't see that going anywhere without some big big private donor to fund it, cause the city and county don't have a spare cent.

New Olympus High could be built for cheap

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/neighbo...trict.html.csp

...Granger High and Olympus High will have new, earthquake-safe homes, built adjacent to the old buildings, by fall of 2013. The projects will use about half, possibly less, of the $256 million bond approved by voters in November 2009...

That would be cool. Last year I read on Granite's website that Granger was to be built with $40 million while Olympus was to be built with $64 million. Not sure which is correct, or why the budgets would be different. Last time I talked with the architect of Olympus, she said it would be a 3-story design if she could make her way through the bureaucracy. The space is quite limited so that would make sense. The faculty and students of Olympus tried to convince the district to build a geothermal school, but I don't think they approved. Maybe this will get them to reconsider. It'll be nice to see my school rebuilt anyway.

Thanks for the pics John. Looks like you know the right spots for the new major developments that will be rising.

Questar is wasting no time. I'm used to proposals and then 2 years of BS before anything happens.
