I officially don't feel special any more. Back around 2003, tried to find a copy of Gravel's thesis and it turns out he didn't even have it any more. There was one copy on perpetual loan to a prof at Tech and we had to get another faculty member to pry it out of his hands. Made copies, including one for Ryan, and have watched this thing grow ever since.

Now, any schmuck in the world can read it thanks to WSB:

Click on the thesis link for the whole thing in a PDF

How does anyone put all that time into a graduate thesis and NOT keep a copy? He didn't even have one on his computer? That seems strange.

About :30 into the video, a "High Line" park sign is shown.

I was in new york last week and made it a point to visit. It's a nice little oasis, and unique as an elevated abandoned rail line, but hardly the city-changing equivalent of our beltline. It seemed too manicured for my taste as well. (and seemed to be full of overly-fashion conscious/hipster types - though that was probably just due to the neighborhood it's in)

I think the beltline's potential is more in its neighborhood-connecting ability - although 4 new parks are being built along it, I really think once people begin to use its trails to move between neighborhoods, it will really take off. (esp. the transit portion)

He had loaned out any hard-copies he had which nobody returned and had a hard-drive crash, IIRC. This scan looks like it came from the same source I used. Love his iso drawings of the southside of town

I'm pretty sure it isn't finished yet...it looks to be in the very preliminary stages.

Well, the man on Channel 2 says they are going to have the high speed light rail running in 3 or 4 years. Which is way better than the last I heard which was 20 or something.

That's funny. . . I remember in 1995 looking in the AJC while at my recently divorced dad's condo (he had us that weekend and had a subscription to the AJC). It had a drawing of the 12 commeter rail lines planned out of Atlanta and I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I was 14 and didn't understand economics and politics. The article said 3 of the lines would be running by 1998 - the line to Madison, Athens, and I think Lovejoy or something.

Cybele, I know you know, we'll believe it when we see it.

Evereyone seems to forget the fact that in August 2012 Georgians will be going to the polls to vote on a 1 cent sales tax for TRANSIT and transportation projects throughout the state. That's a FUNDING SOURCE that is not currently available.

Mayor Kasim Reed has stated the Beltline is Atlanta's number 1 priority on the list of transit projects...

IMHO, commuter rail is dead in Georgia!

Well, one thing about the Beltline, where is it going to take you. Say I get on the HSR thing at Sears, which will get me to Piedmont Park. But then I got to get off and take it back to my car, so why not just drive to Piedmont to start with, plus I can take the dog?

I am not saying I'm against it I am just asking.

I used to think light rail was the better option for the Beltline, but have since changed my preference to streetcars being the used. The Betline will have 22 transit stops, which is about 1 stop ever mile.

Light rail would never reach the 35-55 mph speed along the Beltline. So, we'd might as well use a tourist-like mode of transit and enjoy the sites...
