Each county should have that right !!!!! Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos would not exist with out Mobile County. Water street should be the main corridor for such development with sidewalks and pedestrian bridges. I`m not a gambler but casinos bring quility entertainment. We see advertisements on I-10 Alabama all the time about concerts, comedy shows and etc.

I mean, I wasn't saying I'm against gambling or anything....just that, given the way things seem to be leaning, it's unlikely in the NEAR future.

However, I think it's highly likely and I've always thought the DIP area would be nice for that type of development...but then, that would call for a lot of relocating residents...

I don't really know.haha

I'm thinking the part of the parkway that leads towards Daupin Island...
I guess maybe because much of that area is literally right on the bay.

But again, I think it's too heavily residential for any serious development like that. I think anything of this magnitude would probably be best suited for the area along I-10 north of the downtown core.

IF THERE WERE THAT TYPE OF DEVELOPMENT IN THE MAKING WHY NOT BUILD THEM IN A AREA WHERE URBAN GROWTH WOULD SPREAD? PRICHARD/SARALAND AREA WHERE THE NEW TRACK WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BUILT, Orange Grove area downtown, DIP, South of Brookley Field on the Bay would be nice.

If we built casinos in a isolated area in the city just think of the potential growth in that area. new roads and highways would have to be built to accomodate 4 to 5 casinos. We would need 8 to 16 chain restaurants (ie., Olive Garden, Red Lobster, TGIF, Ruby Tuesday, AppleBees, O'charley's, Chili's) 8 to 16 fastfood and local restaurants (McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Taco Bell, WhataBurger, Hardee's, Chick'filay, Arby's, KFC, Pop'eyes, Subway, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Captain D's, Krystal's with addition to buffets and local restaurants) that's pratically a new city. Banks, new residential areas, Hospitals....the list goes on and on.

I would want a casino district that actually complemented Mobile's existing entertainment offerings instead of competing with them. I would like to see the currently State Dock's property north of the convention center redeveloped into three or more high quality casino hotels and a regional shopping center/entertainment area alongside the waterfront. The only problem would be linking this development to LoDa and other points of the city.

At this point in time, I really think it's important to encourage more dense growth. For one, that's what new development is trending towards, and for another, it's just smarter and healthier.

Building it in an isolated part of town would create some massive growth, but all that will do is encourage what we're trying to prevent, a loss of tourism in the rest of town. Whatever it is that you're suggesting be built, it should be done in junction with other downtown organization so that things compliment eachother.

I agree. I really would like to fill in the skyline on the western side of downtown adding 3 or 4 high rises to compliment the rsa tower. It would be nice to see 3 or 4 28 to 36 story high rises downtown. everything seems so bunched up we need to spread out.

Building them on the Water street water front would be best first.A good way to connect it with the rest of downtown would be four or five pedestrian bridges.

Does anybody know what is going on with the Gulf Quest Museum it suppose to break ground and fondation suppose to be laid this month ?

The rendering for the new luxury condos on Florida street looks nice ! I hope something will be done with the little strip mall next door though.I`m thinking luxury apartments.

Hmmm..... I hoped for a highrise hotel on that parcel.

Quote:
The Mobile City Council has approved the purchase of a parcel of downtown property near the waterfront for a little under $1 million.

The pie-shaped parcel, about the size of a football field, sits at the foot of Government Street.

The city paid $970,000 in cash for the property, drawing on bond money that was specifically earmarked for that purpose, said Mayor Sam Jones. The council OK'd the purchase Tuesday.

The site was once home to an Amtrak station, but the facility flooded five years ago during Hurricane Katrina and was eventually sold to Millennium LLC, a California development group.

That company had ambitious plans to build a 241-unit condominium and retail project called Water Street Landing, but the plans began to fall apart when one of the group's partners died unexpectedly.

Ultimately, the bank that lent the group the money foreclosed on the property.

John Olszewski, head of the city's real estate department, said bank appraisers had put the property's value between $1.5 million and $1.9 million.

With the credit crunch in full effect, that price proved to be more than the market could bear.

Olszewski said several private parties also were interested in the property but could never make the deal work -- likely because financing was scarce, and not many entities have access to a million in cash for that kind of investment.

In this case, he said, a down economy actually worked in the city's favor.

"We couldn't have done it two years ago at that price, and wouldn't be able to do it next year at that price," Olszewski said.

Jones said the city will likely use the property for overflow parking for the nearby cruise terminal. Revenue from the parking should pay for the purchase price in "a few years," he said.

Eventually, Jones said, he hopes to attract another developer to the site. Ideally, the site would have a parking structure with some commercial or retail development on the property as well, he said.

New Restaurant coming to LODA

According to the Lagniappe, Island Thyme is moving from Catherine Street to 453 Dauphin Street, which if I'm thinking correctly, is a recently renovated building on the corner of dauphin and lawrence, across from the Robertson Gallery.

453 is the building between the corner building and the Alabama Music Box.

451 Dauphin Street is the corner building.

Last time I checked they were parceling out that building to artists, musicians, and small time foods. I wonder if they are using that whole bottom floor now or maybe upstairs.
