There are aspects of the NAC that continue to hold merit. Its interface with the canal is not one of them.

Cheers,

Saw the first panel going in this morning and there were 5 or 6 installed when I bussed by a few minutes ago. This should be a pretty quick installation at this pace.

Here is another - again not by me.

Just a quick 1084 pieces of glass to install and this wall is as good as done

Should make the trades people working on the interior of the building happy when the glass is all on. With the severe thunderstorms that have been taking place the last couple of weeks, it must be annoying trying to work on a building so exposed to the weather still...

Caught some glass installation on the Ottawa Convention Centre today.

First an overview from across the canal. Panorama created using Autostictch.

Now a little closer:

Some panes being readied for installation.

Vertical panorama of glass installation progress.

Close-up detail. The glazing is more transparent than I imagined it would be. I thought in daytime it would look more mirrored and only transmit light through at night. Oh well, I'm liking the smokey tint of the glass so far.

Glass installation requires no fear of heights, that's for sure. You wouldn't catch me in that thing!

A new piece being flown in by the crane operator.

Manhandling a big pointy thing!

And finally a panorama showing the OCC in context with the canal and Parliament hill.

(All pictures taken by me and my point and shoot Olympus FE-270. Panoramas created using Autostitch found at www.autostitch.net )

For those of us from out of town, would you say that the glazing has a greyish, bluish or greenish tinge? - it is hard to tell from the photos. Green would be awesome but it's all good.

My take on the colour is it's "Smokey Green" if that's even a colour. The third picture in my update shows the glass still in their crates and their colour in the picture is pretty close to what they look like in real life.

Sort of like old-fashioned sunglasses. The kind your mom used to wear. LOL

The NAC is definitely doesn't interface well with pedestrians; however, architecturally, I think it's interesting and definitely holds some merit. Considering the era it was built, Ottawa was really lucky actually.

The Convention Centre is coming along really nicely. Does anyone else have a slight anxious pang that the City or the NCC will still find a way to step in and ruin this all? It seems too good to believe that such a nice building could actually get constructed in Ottawa without having all its soul and character sucked out of it by politicians and bureaucrats. (<- my far too over-developed cynicism speaking)

convention centre - glass - waterproofing?

Anyone know how they keep the weather out with this design - how do they seal it - to obviously avoid leaks from rain and melting snow?? I can't imagine how just looking at those amazing pictures.

Just biking by, so I thought I'd grab a few shots of the Ottawa Convention Centre. Kind of hot and hazy today (32C) so the pics are a little fuzzy. Oh, and I have a 🞵🞵🞵🞵 point-and-shoot camera! LOL

The glazing is progressing slowly, but it's starting to reflect other parts of the downtown. You can just make out the reflection of the Peace Tower in the glass.

A close-up of the above, showing the detail of the reflected Peace Tower and the tops of the Chateau Laurier Hotel on the left.

I was there near quitten' time. A few workers chillaxin' in 32C heat on one of the mezzanine levels.

A vertical panorama of the facade and Parliament Hill in the distance.

Vertical panorama showing the glazing progress and the crane towering over the site.

Funky panorama of the OCC and the MacKenzie King Bridge. (Plus the front wheel of my bike!)

(All pictures by me and my crappy Olympus FE-270. All panoramas created by Autostitch found here: www.autostitch.net )

The boxy portion of this building that attaches to the Rideau Centre is getting an interesting two-tone skin. Does anyone know what material that is? It seems to have a very interesting texture.
