Re: Sun article

Will this newly spruced up area by the canal in front of the convention centre have any life added to it, or just new landscaping, concrete etc? If they don't plan on adding any restaurant/patio to this revitalization, then its a half assed project.

While adding permanent vendors can add more passive surveillance, livening up a space doesn't always mean adding more spaces of materialism. It can also mean adding soft edges and public activity or recreation spaces.

I agree. Also what is this talk of "sinking" the roadway? They don't actually mean burying the highway I assume?

Can't wait to see the rest of the Dia-grid bolted up to top half of the front of the building!

Panoramic shots taken with my iPhone today and using Autostitch. (Sorry about some of the blurry edges, a piece of fluff from my pocket was on the lens! LOL)

The Ottawa Convention Centre from the Laurier Bridge.

Top to bottom Pano from MacKenzie Bridge. The scalloped edges of the "Tulip Petals Lying on Their Side" motif have begun to take shape.

Vertical Pano showing the progress of the framing for the exterior glazing. They have completed half of the second level now.

Vertical Pano showing the exterior framing for the glazing also showing the interior light-well that will flow through 3 floors of the Centre. (Sorry about the fluff on the lens! LOL)

Close-up of the interior light-well.

All pictures by me and Panos created using Autostictch found at http://cvlab.epfl.ch/~brown/autostitch/autostitch.html )

This building looks all the more interesting as it get's closer to being done. I'm sure it'll look absolutely stunning when it's done, and lit up at night!

Went for a rollerblade down by the canal and snapped some shots of this project. Looks like they're pretty similar to the more recent pics posted, but I'll post them anyways:

This is definitely one of Ottawa's best recently. Now we just need an overhaul of Westin and DND and then things will really shape up on that stretch.

This building is going to look amazing! I definately put it in the same class as the National Gallery, Museum of Civ, etc. Our skyscraper architecture might be short and boring, but we sure can build landmark buildings.

A couple of panoramas I did today using my iPhone and Autostitch.

I'm not liking the facade facing the Mackenzie Bridge at the moment. I was hoping they were glazing this wall but it looks like it will just be spandrel or worse... aluminum siding! ACK!

And the curvy west facade. Almost finished the framing for the glazing. I am eager to see the first sheets of glass to be installed.

I Agree that the flat panel wall that exsists facing the DND building does — compared to the rest of the building. I wonder if they are going to frame and install glass to better integrate the building with the Rideau Center or not...

The view from this building is going to be ridiculous.

Looks good but...

Has anyone noticed that in the photos looking north over the canal, the view of the Chateau Laurier will be partially obstructed by the new building. Thus the famous postcard scene of Ottawa will be forever changed by the new convention centre.

This is unfortunate considering Ottawa has only a few postcard-worthy scenes in the first place. (And in my humble opinion, the Chateau will always be more of a landmark than a glass-walled convention centre, no matter how striking.)

^ I think the presence of the spectacularly bland DND HQ, NAC, Westin, and Mackenzie King Bridge in that same vista are of much more concern.

Agreed, but blandness is a matter of taste. When the NAC was built in the 1960s it was hailed (by many) as an architectural jewel. Most also thought the Westin was attractive for the 1980s. DND HQ probably never had many fans (that I'm aware of), but it was typical office design for its time. (For the record I agree all are ugly, but domolishion doesn't look iminent.)

Let's hope the new convention centre doesn't lose its lustre as quickly as its neighbours.
