It definitely looks similar to the metal cladding of 7WTC... only thing is, the FT's base is supposed to be covered with prismatic glass.

It’s in the middle of the picture, it couldn't be any clearer...whatever that was. It's now out of view, I suspect Zen is correct.

Pictures 4 thru 11 above show the frame for the climbing crane.

It will probably look like a 21st century version of the ones that built the St. Louis Arch.

*Googles St. Louis Arch construction*....oh, now I see what its gonna look like!

Because the tower tapers, so will the frame of the climbing crane. ZenSteelDude, will there be one on the opposite corner or is the only one?

A climbing crane seems extravagant. Why does this tower need that? There are cranes on the top like any other tower. The unusual shape is not that unusual to warrant this in my opinion. There are more fantastical shapes being constructed around the world that don't employ climbing cranes. Someone please enlighten us.

The reasion for it is most likely the same as that for using climbing tower cranes in the core. There is no tower to get in the way so there will be less "call-back" work. The track well most likely be removed below the climber as it advances up the side of the tower. That way they can install the curtian wall without having to wait till the entire crane is removed.

This tower has become perhaps the most photographed tower under construction in the world.

*Traynor scratches his head...*

I'm sure that explanation makes sense to you because you know what you are thinking, but try explaining it again as if I were an alien from another planet.

For example: Your use of the word "tower" when you say "There is no tower to get in the way."

????????? ??????

Are you using the word tower to refer to a higher concrete core? The way other steel buildings are often built with the steel being bolted to the core long after it has climbed higher than the steel floors. Or do you mean a whole other tower, like 7WTC, for example. Clearly I don't understand.

Furthermore...I am not in the construction trade and do not know what "Call back work" refers to, or how having a "Tower in the way" would affect this... whatever it is.

Sorry to be such a pest but I'm not following the logic so far.

It would probably help if you watch this video from Federaded Equipment. The cranes they are using on Tower One are climbing tower cranes.

http://www.dcmerectors.com/FEDERATED/proj4.html

The tower I'm refering to is the black steel tower the crane sits on.

Now here is a video of a crane doing it the "old fashond way".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx5Qt7_ECEE&feature=related

The problem with th "old fashoned way" is the tower the crane sits on has to run the full hight of the tower the crane is building.

In the case of Tower One, if they had not used "climbing tower cranes" there would be a crane tower in the way of all the service elevator shafts among other things. Having to come back after the tower for the crane was removed and put in all the stuff they couldn't is called "Call-back" work.

This pic was taken in April 2007 as the tower cranes were being installed.

The red bases in the pic above are now at about the 30th floor.

OK that was much clearer, but almost all the construction I know of in Toronto, they always use these internal climbing cranes, so I was taking that as a given. I thought you were calling this external angled crane assembly "climbing crane" because of its angle and somehow it was very different from the usual internal climbing crane. As a matter of fact I thought that internal climbing cranes were the only kind used these days...

What is still not clear to me is why there is a need to put one on the outside of the facade. That was my initial question. I see now that it was me not being very clear.

Why does this tower require a climbing crane on the outside of the building?
