Where is Mem'l Pkwy?? How about Pulaski Pke?
If I enter Huntsville from the east where is the Birmingham/Nashville exit.
Going the other way can I get to Chattanooga or is Scottsboro the end of the line?
Well, most of North Alabama has historically had a problem with poor signage. I mean, the only overhead signs in Decatur are the ones on 6th avenue at the river and on 31 right across the river.

Typically, the DOT, in any state, looks at where an out of town traveler (the ones who need the signs the most) is more likely to be going. For example, a traveler entering Huntsville from the east likely isn't going to Birmingham or Nashville. If they are, it's probable that they're from the Huntsville area, so there's a 90% chance they already know how to get to Bham/Nash. It's much more helpful to out of town driver to sign 565 as Decatur since most people traveling from outside of Madison County, going West on 72, are probably going to or through Decatur instead of Birmingham or Nashville.

459 is a good example. Going east on I-20/59, entering the I-459 interchange, you see signs for Gadsden and Atlanta, and Montgomery is left off. That's because the DOT considers that the most logical route for a traveler to take is US 82 South out of Tuscaloosa to get to Montgomery, not take I-20/59 to I-65.

It's all about the end destination and where a traveler, that needs the signage more than a towny, is going. That's why you see signs for "Airport" going south on Memorial at the I-565 interchange, cause someone coming from north of Huntsville that is going to Decatur likely would have taken a different route to get there (like going through Athens or something).

It's complicated, but if you just think about where the most likely end destination for an out of towner is, it kinda makes sense. It took me a few years to figure this out (long trips between Tuscaloosa and Decatur give me time to think) so I don't know, I might sound like a crazy person to y'all.

All that being said, no, I do not know where there is a sign for New York City in Baltimore.

It's not even the destinations on guide signage that's screwy, it's that htey do a sloppy job on alignment and exit markers as well. Such as marking two lanes as exit only when the left of those exit lanes is also a thru lane.

That new Governors Drive exit sign is a perfect example. Here's a sign that was down for well over a year, and what happens when they put up the new sign with its nice new Clearview font? They have an exit only tab on it when it shouldn't even have one.

Theatre option

I wish Huntsville had a restored theatre downtown like the Princess theatre in Decatur. That would be another location for events to be held downtown besides the VBC. Are any of the old theatres a viable option? I think Sammy T's is in one of them. My memory of downtown theatres is not very good. Growing up always went to the Madison at Parkway City or the Westbury. Names from the past.. lol

Side note-- what is being built on Pratt next to the old Rockabilly Restaurant? The restaurant building is unique but it is one of those places nothing seems to last in.

The Coke plant could be relocated but it would cost $25million, plus a new stadium, and the current stadium cant give tickets away. I would not go to the games if it was free every game. There has to be a better catch than a minor league baseball team. Why not repurpose the Art museum facility?

Yea, that's true. One sign that I HATE is the exit for Research Park Boulevard coming from I-565 eastbound. That first sign should be telling you which lane is going north and which one south before you merge to the right, thinking that that's the ONLY lane going to RPB.

New Kroger

Looks huge... Almost like a Super Wal-Mart. It has to be twice the size of the Publix's in the area. Anyone know why?

Because it's a "Kroger Marketplace".

They originally were pioneered in Arizona with Kroger subsidiary Fry's, and have since pushed eastward to Kroger markets in Houston, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Atlanta, and Nashville.

Besides the signs, that whole off-ramp needs to be reworked. It's ridiculous how long its been there that people still slow down to a crawl to change lanes coming from Madison Blvd when there is still plenty of road left.

Heck, if you get stuck in those lanes, you can still continue on 565 without missing anything.

I'm really surprised there are not more accidents in that area than there are.

The ramps are too close together in that area. Changing two lanes within 1/4 mile is necessary to get onto 565 WB from Research Park Blvd SB. That whole stretch of 565 between the interchange and the Madison Blvd flyover would benefit tremendously from collector-distributor lanes and/or braided ramps. While they're at it, they should also apply the same treatment at Old Madison Pike.

Good news here, continue to support them and it will lead to Atlanta as well.

Huntsville International Airport announced AirTran Airways will increase the number of flights and seats to Orlando International Airport in October to accommodate increased demand due to fall break at area schools.

As a result of the high passenger demand, AirTran Airways is adding an additional flight on October 2, 2010 and October 9, 2010. The airline is also adding more capacity by upgrading selected flights to be operated with the 137-seat Boeing 737 aircraft on peak travel days during the week of October 4 through October 10, 2010.

A few downtown observations

Yes would be expensive to move the Coke plant and then build a new stadium. I think a new stadium is an idea to consider but in the mean time do things that can be done.

The work on the VBC is good and needed. The expansion of the art museum is a good thing. I think the work around the square looks pretty good as well.

I wish more shops and restaurants would be able to go in places on the square or just off it. I wonder if having a hotel closer to the square would help. Several of the buildings might be a good candidate for renovation as a hotel. An example is an old bank building in montgomery that was renovated into a hampton inn.

I went by the Holiday Inn the other day and still think it needs a paint job. That grey is just not attractive.

True, you really gotta know what you're doing in order to drive through there without a mishap.

The Von Braun complex under construction at Redstone Arsenal
This is phase 3 a huge building

Phase III is a six-story building with basement totaling 839,873 square feet in built space. The building serves as a hub to a three-building complex providing a secure facility for the Space and Missile Defense Agency located on the Redstone Arsenal site. Groundbreaking

Local, state and federal officials will break ground Monday for the start of construction on Redstone Gateway, a $1 billion commercial and retail development at the edge of Redstone Arsenal.

The invitation-only groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Gate 9 Visitors Center just off of Interstate 565, according to a news release.

Construction on the office park is expected to get under way in early November.

Plans call for 52 large office buildings holding as many as 15,000 government workers and defense contractors, two hotels, multiple restaurants, an academic campus and outdoor concert venue.

And not too far away

A massive new neighborhood will soon begin taking shape on the western edge of Huntsville.

A city subdivision panel gave preliminary approval to the first 27 of 771 planned homesites in the Preserve at Limestone Creek.

Developer Ray Mahaffey of Brentwood, Tenn., can now start grading and laying out the initial lots. The 585-acre cotton farm on Gray Road in eastern Limestone County was annexed into the city limits in 2008.

Mahaffey said Norfolk Homes will build the first homes, which are expected to sell for between $225,000 and $300,000.
Providence and Columbia High School will serve these residents.

All the more reason for a stadium downtown. I like the ideas of it being where the Coke plant is now. What would it really take for that to become a reality though? (..Besides the obvious..)

I don't understand how Florence, Athens and even Tuscumbia can have actual downtowns and Huntsville just doesn't seem to get it. Wouldn't it be great to go downtown, stop by the bank, pick up some new clothes, have a bite to eat and maybe even grab some groceries for dinner?

Brewers may not return as Huntsville Stars' big league partner
Published: Wednesday, August 18, 2010, 8:59 AM Updated: Wednesday, August 18, 2010, 9:13 AM Mark McCarter, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The Huntsville Stars are among the few Class AA teams not assured of a major league partner for next season and indications are that the parent club, the Milwaukee Brewers, is interested in exploring options elsewhere because of dissatisfaction with Joe W. Davis Stadium.

Stars owner Miles Prentice said he "has no idea" whether the player development contract with the Brewers will be renewed and he has not engaged in formal talks with Milwaukee officials.

"At the end of the day, they need to find the best possible facility," Prentice said.
However, the Stars will continue operations in Huntsville next season, even if a different major league partner is obtained.

If Milwaukee doesn't return, the most likely potential major league affiliates for Huntsville are the California Angels, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants or Seattle Mariners.

"Baseball will be here next year," General Manager Buck Rogers said. "I've got next year's schedule sitting right here."

"We've extended the lease so I certainly plan to be there next year," said Prentice, who announced in April a five-year extension on the city-owned ballpark.

Prentice downplayed recent published reports from Panama City, Fla., that groups there want to build a stadium and obtain membership in the Southern League, and they have talked with him about purchasing or moving the Stars.

He had a conversation with Panama City real estate developer Donald Jackson nearly a year ago but said it was a general inquiry.

Prentice, a New York-based attorney who heads a group that purchased the Stars in 2001, said, "I have a lot of people call me all of the time" who have questions or interest in buying a team.

Prentice has seen the Huntsville franchise plummet to the bottom of the league in attendance, and Monday afternoon's game drew only 440 fans.

Currently 22 of the 30 Class AA working agreements have been renewed or are in the process of renewal. (They are done so on even-numbered years, for either two- or four-year terms.) Four Southern League teams have announced renewals in the past two weeks, leaving Huntsville, Carolina (Cincinnati Reds) and West Tenn (Seattle Mariners) unsigned. Major league teams can shift their affiliations among the three Double-A leagues.

Teams must notify their respective league offices by Sept. 11 if they do not plan to renew their player development contracts, then there is a period from Sept. 16-30 where potential new deals may be negotiated; there are stiff fines for negotiating with new teams outside that two-week window.

It is clearly a situation where Huntsville's ownership will be wooing the Brewers once Prentice can begin discussions with Milwaukee Executive Vice President/General Manager Doug Melvin and his chief aide, Gord Ash.

"We'd certainly love to have the Brewers back," Rogers said. "They're one of the classiest organizations around."

Brewers' officials have grown weary of the lack of response by Huntsville and Stars ownership for improvements to the 26-year-old stadium since the Brewers began their relationship with the Stars in 1999.

"Obviously there are certain areas that need to be addressed with the facility at Joe Davis," said Scott Martins, business manager for the Brewers' minor league operation. "It's a stadium that has had relatively little maintenance. There are few stadiums that old that haven't undergone some major renovation. I think anybody who has been to any other park and then to Joe Davis knows there are issues that need to be addressed."

Stadium problems
Among the issues: poor playing surface, drainage problems (that led to two cancellations last week), stadium lights angled for football play not baseball, a visitors clubhouse that barely meets the lowest standards in minor league ball and the lack of an adequate batting-practice area.

"They like the people here," Prentice said, "but they're frustrated with (the stadium)."

And VBIV will be started soon after this one is done. Not as big as VBIII, but it will make up one massive campus.
