Did you not expect them to grab headlines? This has been one of the most controversial issues in Edmonton for decades, of course they are going to make headlines.

Some interesting aviation news.

Mexicana may have to file for creditor protection. Their flights from YYC and YUL were halted after by Canadian authorities. Perhaps YYC will lose another flight.

Southwest mulls international expansion although this is sort of old news.

American and Air Berlin apply for flight codesharing. I'm hoping Berlin BBI will grow significantly over the years and at some point Air Berlin might fly here.

Air Canada's winter timetable came out today. Nothing new but at least we are keping the YEG-LHR run.

Perhaps the terminal expansion will have good timing and finish as the upswing in air travel continues.

Are they actually ripping up the runway at CCA or are they just putting some X's on the runway and closing it?

July 30, 2010 (Edmonton, Alta.)—Edmonton International Airport (EIA) customers can now enjoy free, fast and reliable wireless Internet access starting today. Free public Wi-Fi is part EIA’s drive to connect with customers using the full sweep of today’s popular online tools and services.

“We’re excited to provide EIA customers with free Wi-Fi service,” says Reg Milley, EIA’s President & CEO. “Free Wi-Fi joins our array of technology and online offerings, such as the new Hudson News ‘Tech on the Go’ store and our flight information screen for mobile devices. We’re also connecting with our customers through social media.”

EIA’s Facebook page gives aviation enthusiasts an inside view of the airport’s day-to-day operations and community involvement. On Twitter, EIA is working to inform customers about weather or other conditions that may impact them.

EIA also provides six business workstations with wired Internet connections in the domestic/international passenger lounge area.

Wi-Fi service at EIA began in June 2004 on a fee-for-use basis. The contract with that provider ended in June 2009. EIA then began exploring options to provide free access to customers. Operational costs for the new Wi-Fi service are recuperated through advertising.

Customers can log in to the new free wireless network by using one of the following:
• Facebook account
• SMS password sent to customer cell
• Carrier roaming partner account
• Basic access for 15 minutes

The network name (or SSID) is: EIA_FREE_WIFI

“Be an EIA Wi-Fi fan” contest

To celebrate free Wi-Fi, EIA is encouraging people to become fans of EIA on Facebook. Current fans and fans who sign up during the contest will be entered to win one of several prizes, including a $1,000 travel voucher, a 32-Gigabyte IPod Touch and free parking. The contest ends August 13, 2010.

Who doesn't use Facebook lol, 500 million users. I did say you can also get a text with a password. If you don't have a cell you shouldn't need WiFi lol.

Well I am an adult in his 30's, have a life, value my privacy and can now surf at YEG. Do you have a cell phone or those just for kids and that textin fad they are into lol.

Actually, they were just saying that the latest wave of new users on fb are the older boomer generation.

Although, I don't know why YEG decided that users need to log onto facebook to access WiFi.

An article by mastermaq today states that it will be for access by laptops only. iPod, smartphones, etc can skip that part of logging on, apparently it has something to do with security.
