He was quite the media whore when he was an Alderman. As soon as he became my MLA, he disappeared into the Tory backbenches. I'm not sure what the issue was that sunk him, but it was a nice election day when he lost to Dave Taylor.

Too bad she isn't running for an Alderman position - she probably has a better chance of winning. And it would give he a chance to make a bit of a name for herself first before trying for mayor.

But on the other hand this is the one and only chance she will get to run as an 'outsider' who can't be associated with anything Council has done in the past. Plus there is no incumbent to run against so this may be her one and only chance to win in her mind.

She'll be back at CFCN this fall when things don't pan out for her.

I doubt that. Her biases will be shown, which will make a return to the anchor desk pretty impossible.

I seem to recall some type of hissy fit at a debate or public forum. Don't know if that sank him, but it probably didn't help.

One thing about Barb Higgins campaign is she and her husband are absolutely loaded, I don't know what she makes but they apparently have a fortune from importing coffee. They could throw a lot of money around.

The most she could legitimately contribute herself would be 10k and her husband 5k. This was put into place around April 2010 under the amendments found in Bill 9. Hence why Alnoor's comments about not throwing another 1.5M into the race are moot since he's not permitted to do that this year anyway. He's basically saying he will follow the law. Which I think we would expect anyway!

Met Ric McIvor at Inglewood Sunfest on Saturday. He said he was strongly in favor of the SE LRT and has been working behind the scenes to secure the funding for it for years. That's promising that he supports it.

Geez, the tv camera really does add 10 lbs. He's not as portly in person as I thought he would be.

I saw lots of Wayne Stewart supporters (or maybe just volunteers) with their "Let's Make Calgary Great!" tshirts.

Those shirts really inspired me, and I was happy to see that someone was finally paying attention to the Calgary "greatness-deficit", ensuring that next time we'll be at the top of the MacLeans "Who's Great??" annual poll.

Anyway, it's inspired me so much that I think that I may myself run for office, using my even better slogan "Let's Make Calgary Super-Duper!!"

The poll in the Calgary sun has Higgins slightly ahead of McIver and very little support for the others.

My friend and I were walking around Bridgeland yesterday and Gian-Carlo Carra was out knocking on doors. We quickly ducked down an alley - we weren't in the mood to get into Calgary politics at the time lol. More in the mood for ice cream!

Global had a pole out the night after Higgins announced and she had the lead; but only slightly.

The undecides in their pole were huge! It was like 40% or more!

Then she should get a job as City spokesperson. Being mayor is about pulling the levers of power, not inspiration. For all Bronco has done, look at the last approval rating for mayor and council, still sky high. People like results, don't care about methods. The media are just a tad lazy, and the squeaky wheel gets the grease in media coverage. As the opinion of council is not regularly tracked, the media got into a funk where they thought they were representing the people in being super anti current council - and they were proven wrong.

Taxes are low, citizens have more services than ever, and continuous progress in highly visible infrastructure. Bronco found the formula - you have to give him that.

Do you think Mrs. Higgins can pull levers more or less effectively than Nenshi or McIver?

Higgins said she didn't want to in her first press conference. That it is the Mayor's job to get out of the way and let the bureaucracy innovate (obviously paraphrasing). Of course, her positions could change over time - but right now it sounded like she wanted to let the lunatics run the asylum.

Why do you assume that administration are "lunatics"? I think a candidate that recognizes the experience and expertise that exists at the City is a good thing, much better than an outsider who assumes they simply know better than all who work for it.
