Great mentality there, replace something that works just for the sake of spending money. (This is assuming the sails are still in good shape)

The same reasoning would make digging holes and filling them back in increase GDP because money is being spent...

EDIT: Just want to point out that if the sails do indeed need replacing, I have nothing against it and I think it's good that we take the federal money now, as in a few years we won't get a dime for something like this.

^ More likely, the sails were rated for 20-years (as with the BC Place roof), and are actually well past their recommended lifespan. Therefore, it is a substantial improvement to get 30-year sails installed, and no doubt they will be relied on for the next 40 years. :-)

The whole Jack Poole Plaza is now closed and fenced off on Saturday for the private MPI function to be held in the afternoon. Some tourists and locals were disappointed not able to get closer to the cauldron for photos.

I hope this conference will result in a lot of future event and business for Vancouver.

Well what can you do about it... MPI paid tens of thousands to privately rent out the entire plaza area.

Nothing has been decided. According to yesterday's 24 Hours Vancouver report, negotation is still going on with COV. But half of the clock could be moved to B.C. Place Stadium or Vancouver Convention Centre. The other half could go to Whistler.

Actually the higher the rent the better, PavCo needs to recoup the billion dollar invested into the convention centre.
At least the seaside walkway is still open.
