Thanks for the updates. Did you notice if anyone was working while you were there?

Considering downtown is pretty much dead today, i doubt anyone is working there as many have taken today off for a longer weekend.

That said, the last time i hear noise from there it was inbehind the imperial oil building.

I took the photos on Wednesday so there were workers at most of the construction sites in town. This site, Theatre Lofts, and NSP HQ being exceptions.

I know the office market for downtown is dead, and i mean dead. There was all but a few transactions reported for the qtr, of which were just renewals and lets say they weren't very big.

I know the stats are due out soon, but your going to see downtown vacancy rate climbing as tenants are either downsizing, closing, or relocating to the sub's.

ESPECIALLY with Emera moving. I have seen billboards with the owner trying to push for new tenants for that space. It is a considerable contiguous amount of downtown office space that will open up when they move.

If a glut of office space is the problem, then I wonder if they have considered re-designing it as residential?

Has anybody seen tradesmen on this site recently? Maybe they are just taking time to rethink the restoration now that they have the walls bared and can see the condition of the buildings. Maybe they have even decided to keep more of the original buildings (I would prefer to be optimistic).

I'm off on vacation and my work phone is off, I haven't had too much of an oppertunity to talk to the people invovled in a couple of these projects around the city. Back to business in anouther week.

As much as we need more people living downtown I would hate to see this be re-designed to residential. I would still rather see this as office space because I see it as a building block in the development of a financial district in Halifax.

I'd rather see this get the interior redone and no tower... but international place built!

International Place won't get built for sometime unless the office market in Halifax picks up. Its simply too big and there isn't enough demand to fill it within a window the developers would require.

If the trade centre proposal goes, then International Place will become even less likely to be built.

On the other hand, maybe politicians in Nova Scotia will find a way to attract more jobs to the Halifax area, and the convention centre will be start. We can look at it either way (this is all subjective) so we might just as well be optimists.

Considering in the past few months a number of companies have downsized and move out of here because of the tax environment i tend to believe the government is doing the opposite.

We need new companies in the province, but the convention centre will do nothing to help the province in that regard.

The province needs to decrease the tax rate starting with the HST. However, the convention centre will attract businesses to the province. It isn't just a tourist destination, it caters to businesses. Businesses aren't going to just start coming to Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia will need good marketing people to encourage people to set up in Nova Scotia and the new convention/trade centre is a start.

I don't understand your position that a convention/trade centre will do nothing to attract business to Nova Scotia?
