New facade of the GM Building. Its especially noticeable when its getting dark or overcast. Its a very bright blue compared to the old facade:

Nice work, I favor the shots of the port.

I havn`t really noticed the facade of the GM Building,I have noticed that they are replacing the windows though. It would have been really cool if the new hotel was tall enough may be 300' to fill in the gap in the skyline pic 2 ,between the GM and Battle House.

The really have given Weinacker's Shopping Center a face lift. It looks really nice. Glad to see that area come along. Now its time to jump the street and work on that run down Dollar General. And also bring more retail downtown.

The carbon steel unit at ThyssenKrupp's plant is running through final preparations at its hot strip mill, with the goal of feeding the first steel slabs into the furnace in the last week of July.

It will be the first major part of the $5 billion complex on the Mobile-Washington county line to begin operation, as Germany's largest steelmaker works to expand sales in North America.

Oil spill creates a mini job boom in Mobile
Published: Monday, July 19, 2010, 5:00 AM
Robert McClendon, Press-Register

The Deepwater Horizon disaster has emptied condos in Gulf Shores and shuttered seafood processing plants in Bayou La Batre, but anecdotal evidence and a local economist suggest it fueled something of a mini oil boom in Mobile, at least for some business owners.

Mobile added 1,000 new jobs in May, reversing a months-long downward trend in the city's business activity, according to a report published by Don Epley, a professor at the University of South Alabama and an expert in real-estate markets.

Epley said the new jobs were evenly distributed across all employment sectors.

Sales tax figures for May, which would give a snap shot of the city's economy, have not yet been tallied, according to city officials.

The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded April 20, unleashing a gusher of oil and flooding Mobile with hundreds of contractors and BP officials who came to deal with the unfolding disaster.

The economic activity created by that influx of money sparked the job creation, according to Epley.

Majority of the hotels in Mobile are around 100 % booked.I also heard that BP bought the Watermen building downtown. Some of lofts/townhomes were occupied by BP officials and workers downtown as well.

The windows ... are kind of a disappointment, sorry to be negative. I was hoping they would get rid of the triangular decorations on the top and bottom of each window and extend the glass all the way to the top and bottom of the blocks. Oh well, I really can't complain for any bit of exterior improvements. The nice blue tint is a huge plus.

Nice pictures, Alxx611. Thanks for sharing! Btw, where exactly is Sibley St. park?

Hey, it appears I could make out four cranes at the container terminal in one of Alxx's bay shots. Are there four cranes at the container terminal now??

Oh yeah the Winn -Dixie in the Weinacker`s Shopping Center in mid town(MiMo) has come a long ways and it has a nice upscale look to it,especially in the bakery, deli, and produce sections. That Winn Dixie has to be the largest one in the city and maybe the state now.

I saw Weinacker's Shopping Center the last time I was in Mobile three weeks ago, and it looks fantastic! I was thrilled to see that. Largest Winn-Dixie in the state, really? I've never been in there, so why do you make that claim?

My mistake, I meant to say that only the windows are new. I dont believe the facade has changed at all yet. I'm thinking the windows are merely just being tested or something, I can't imagine the facade being changed while still having the windows attached.

Sibley Street park is located off of scenic 98 just north of Fairhope in Montrose. The park would be on a road to your left called Sibley St. It may be the most beautiful and incredible place on the Bay Area and I suggest everyone visit it.

Perhaps this closing means more development opportunities in the Brookley Field area?

As you know, the University of South Alabama and the Mobile community for many years have considered the highest and best potential use of USA’s Brookley Center campus to bolster the economic development of the upper Gulf Coast region...
