The Atlanta Business Chronicle ran an article yesterday about the proposed renovation of the GA Dome- with some renderings. Here's the link:

http://atlanta.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2010/06/28/daily19.html

Someone posted a link to an alternate proposal that a local firm did. Here's that link:

http://cloudarchitecturedesign.com/?p=13

Check out the rest- it looks pretty cool, and it's more integrated into Downtown and would help out the area. Plus, the Falcons wouldn't have to deal with the state.

Here's the firm's website: www.cloudarchitecturedesign.com
They must be new- I hadn't heard of them before.
In their proposal, they suggested the site where the Civic Center currently sits. I've only been in and around that area a few times for events at the Civic Center but it seems like a good location for something like that. And didn't the city consider selling that land anyway and getting rid of the Civic Center?

I'm guessing the new stadium would handle the world cup in 2018/12

Anyone want to speculate on the significance of this blurb from the renovation article:

"The cost of public debt in 2015 "will look vastly different" than the debt on the current dome."

Maybe they could figure out some way to accidentally demolish the Peachtree & Pine crack house while they're tearing down the civic center.

I thought Peachtree & Pine was a homeless shelter? If they're selling crack over there the authorities should be alerted.

I think it is offensive and racist to insinuate that crack is sold at the P&P shelter. Just because it's full of crack addicts that don't have cars to go anywhere, there is no reason to conclude that the market forces which rule all human destiny are in play at said location.

Dome Renovation

The Populous design is'nt that bad either, however they did not seem to adress the retractable roof issue. As the saying goes when it comes to renovating the Dome "you can put lipstick on a pig but in the end it's still a pig" (Obama 08).

I really hope something positive happens with Polaris. There are few Atlanta icons as it is, and even though it doesn't stick out amongst all the buildings that have gone up around it, it is still a large part of Atlanta's history and skyline.

I have never been to it, but my father who grew up in Atlanta in the 60's talks about it all the time. I was even going to plan a date with my wife to take her to Polaris about a month or so after they closed it .

Jack Up the Polaris

I have to wonder if the Hyatt was engineered so that you could add floors, like Portman did the the Apparell Mart and Inforum. If they could just jack the Polaris up another 10-12 floors it would have a view again. It's odd to think that when it was built it was the tallest point in ATL, even odder to think that Portman would then block the view with his towers next door, so that his signature revolving restaurant would only have a view of the AC units next door. It's so boxed in now, I cant see it having a future as a revolving view restaurant anymore.

Awesome-
Sanka
I think I dropped three bills when my girlfriend and I went in '04. So that menu looks a bit more pleasant. I drank out of the bottle when presented like Jim Carrey in Anchorman.
Good times.
I do remember the view was still impressive despite all of the build up around the building.

Technically the majority of the drug dealing goes on at the corner of Pine/Juniper and in the empty lot next door. The dealers aren't too hard to recognize b/c they're the guys standing around looking suspicious among a whole lot of homeless people wearing pristine basketball shoes, fully matching new athletic gear and they aren't doling out soup or preaching the gospel. They also conveniently disappear when the cops bother to show up. I've been by there enough to see a few get arrested but also enough to see it hasn't made a dent.

I can't imagine the $ being all that great if their market is the homeless. It can't be all that lucrative to stand around amongst homeless folks to bring in a dollar or two...there must be more profitable places to do it.

NYC Park Serves As Model For Atlanta Beltline

I remember about a year ago when I was saying these parks were basically the same and I was crucified, this provides some comfort.
