While it's a good idea that the oil sands should do a better job with the environment, these ads are still retarded. They should also be advertising that people stop visiting the U.S because of their track record (Exxon Valdez, Gulf spill, etc..), why not boycott Britain as BP was the culprits involved in the gulf spill. Now that I think about it, why not boycott anywhere that produces petroleum, because let's face it, it's not good for environment no matter where it's produced. Even better yet, let's just boycott every country that uses petroleum. There problem solved.

This is the bottom line. If this group wants to target the Oils Sands, fine, but target all others who are part of the problem - which is just pretty much the rest of the planet.

I don't know what the stats are for the whole province, but it's nowhere near a person a day in the tar sands. Last year at Syncrude, I can't recall any work related deaths, just a couple of deaths due to driving accidents.

I think he meant all types of accidents, not specifically the Tar Sands.

While we're talking environmental controls, your point about industrial safety is interesting. In Alberta, there were 166 industrial fatalities in 2008,though only 52 were due to industrial incidents (the rest were disease related or auto related)- certainly no where near 1 per day. More interesting is to compare AB to others ... AB has been averaging about 95 fatalities-per-million hours worked for the past 10 years - which is comparable to BC, ON and QC. Finally, in all four provinces, the number one or two source of industrial fatalities are construction/trade and transport related. (All numbers courtesy provincial WCBs).

So in the end it is unlikely that working in the Sands is any more dangerous than foresty, home construction or road maintenance. At least from a worker's perspective.

If you believe that it's an isolated incident then you're naive. About a month ago it came to light that the gov't actually helped cover up animal deaths related to the settling ponds. We're not just talking water fowl here: moose, deer, wolves, BEARS, and birds were all victims. Relying on an air cannon to keep wildlife away is about as stupid as putting up a scarecrow.

Don't forget to include Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, St. John's in that first bullet. I hate to deny a problem by pointing out someone else's but COME ON! Quebec and Ontario, who are so critical of Alberta's environmental track record are literally poisoning our great lakes with raw sewage.

Oh, and did you hear about the oil spill in the St. Lawrence beside Montreal yesterday?

Just goes to show how hypocritical people can be. I bet San Francisco (where this groupl who made this ad is based out of) pumps sewage into the bay.

Oh probably. But still, the tarsands are a disgraceful scar on this province. A very visible scar. If their sewage were somehow visible from space I'm sure it would get more press.

Its just the junky addict dissing their drug dealer. If they cleaned up their addiction, there would be no demand which is what causes the environmental disaster they claim Alberta has created, and for which the users of gasoline and petrochemical products have to accept full responsibility for.

Actually, you can clearly see sewage pipes going straight into the bay on Google maps

i really thought that dumping raw sewage was long over but wow. i had no idea it was still going on and in such massive quantities. doing a quick search on google, Detroit alone dumped over 31 BILLION gallons of raw sewage in the Rouge and Detroit rivers last year. That's disgusting.

Damnit! I'm not sure how to link to a previously 'zoomed' spot. It was meant to show the "Southeast Treatment Plant" shown here -

Anyways, the point was that the producers of this commercial have crap (excuse the pun) in their own backyard to worry about.

That was a leak from Alberta... Our smog too comes from there.

Perhaps I should re-state: thousands of bird deaths at one time is an isolated incident. Have other deaths happened from time to time? Of course. But nothing even approaching the scale of the Syncrude incident. You'll notice that no one tried (or even could try) to cover that one up. Because the scale was unprecedented.

But we don't shut down our entire highway system because 13 ducks got ran over last week, so the oilsands are scary, right?

You are all false, water is (partially) cleaned before dumped in St Lawrence! Please check your facts before posting anything...
