As far as I know, the trusses are all one piece correct? So how does it get staged below the launcher and between the two pilons and then get lifted into place when it is in fact longer than the distance between the two pilons- as presumably the go from center to center? Perhaps I'm wrong in believing that the truss is being lifted from below in the first place as opposed to slid into place from the eastern abuttment (in this particular case) seen in the pic.
This discussion would be best suited to the WLRT thread.

The precast guideway sections come in something like 10' or 20' lengths, then they are tied together in place with cables (and otherwise as well I think).

Slide show from Richmond - Canada Line Construction. Calgary will look very similar.

Too funny! I knew he was rapping just by looking at him. Are all rappers obligated to use the same hand gestures?

Slides 2 & 3 are the best examples of how the launching truss works.

If you look closely you'll notice the top of the piers are actually the same style as well, so obviously SNC Lavalin held onto the forms used there and are re-using them here.

They're using a lot of equipment, forms, temporary bridges, etc. from the Canada Line construction.

The Richmond slide show gives a pretty good idea for sure, I'm looking forward to watching the big yellow crane thing in action.

The latest rumours around the office here are that the launching truss could be up and lifting the first segments as early as next week! Will definitely be cool to see from the ground, but I'm also excited because I'll get to be one of the first to stand up top!!

Alot of stuff happening at other areas of the site as well, Westbrook excavation continues and the temporary bridge over the trench at 69th street was opened this weekend. The excavation south of the AMA building at 45th street station is almost complete and is really starting to look like a station.

I've uploaded a couple more pics to my flikr. Any requests, let me know.

Cheers,

Is the temporary bridge at 69th a Bailey bridge?

^ yes it is and they are keeping the wooden planks for the deck surface. Pretty cool as we don't usually get to drive over wooden decks in urban areas all that often..

Thanks for the pics yyc_engineer. You can get to where I can't. A couple of webcams would be a nice idea as well; ie: Westbrook, 45th, 69th. The must be a couple of bucks in the PR budget for that.

Thanks for posting the slideshow.

I didn't realize they were in such short sections. This begs me to question, how do they then fit them and hold them together so sturdily and snuggly? Are they post tensioned through the casings that are seen in the section in pic 5? I can't imagine how they would get a cable taut enough, plus it would seem that there would be a fantastic amount of shear.

Thats pretty much how they are held together. Its not entirely the cable they run that holds them together fully, as they are notched as well.

Heres a picture of one of the ones being built for Calgary from the WestLRT web site:

Source: westlrt.ca

You can see the teeth on it that presumably would have opposing grooves on the other side.

When I was in Mumbai they are building this HUGE bridge called the Bandra Worli Sea Link. They are using a launching truss on a GIGANTIC scale. I found this video if you fast-forward to 2 minutes it shows how the launching truss works on a huge scale.

Hey all,

Lots happening on site this week, most notably the Launcher is almost fully set up and scheduled to being lifting test sections on Monday, if all goes well we should see the first sections being lifted into place starting Wednesday. According to the erection contractor, they are aiming to lift three spans per week, at that rate we should be up and over 9th Ave before the end of the summer!

More pics on my flikr page, http://www.flickr.com/photos/51553246@N07/ , also a few below.

Happy Stampeding,

The first segments were being installed this evening. It looks like the hoist 3 or 4 up and then place and install them.
