I went there today. A very nice selection of gear. Lots of audio clips from the past playing over the loud speakers, A shooting booth and lots of floor helpers. Maybe too many floor helpers. I was asked if I needed help 4 times and that was just the helmet section. Great Store.

I noticed tonight that there was considerable clearing, grading, heavy equipment, etc. on the section above Dartmouth Crossing, immediately north of Wright ave. along the 118. I believe this is the area DC wanted to put their residential/light commercial section although I've never heard anything about a development agreement being in place.

For me - I think Dartmouth Crossing is a very interesting development - but I'm a little disappointed about some of the missed opportunities here. I think it's great that there is a residential component - but they really missed the mark on the commercial 'street' concept.

I'm not too unhappy with how they did the parking - although for me I would've made the parking much more landscaped - maybe have the main road next to one set of buildings - with a landscaped island with trees and a side walk, then 2 rows of parking and then parking in front of the other commercial units (like they have now) - but what they really missed in here is putting residential above. This would've been a really interesting, especially if they had done some of the big box retail this way too.

Something to think about for the next big box retail project as the city grows - would be great.

They have sewer pipes on location now so they are probably laying the base for some roads.

They've been clearing the land there for a little while now. It will interesting to see how much progress they make there in the coming months.

A toys'r'us!?!? Thats really really bad. It means that DC will be competing or stealing the Toys'r'us from Mic Mac. Its already a dangerous competitor. I never even shop at DC or understand its purpose. There is a climate controlled mall across the highway. Yet here we have this wind swept concrete desert spreading everywhere like cancer and stealing business from down town. Its a very unhealthy development for the HRM and a harsh shopping enviroment. All so we can have one of these faux shopping downtowns that are in style now.

I can tell you now this fake shopping street trend will end much faster than the shopping mall frenzy of the 60's 70's and 80's once people get sick of getting soaking wet going from store to store.

Ummmm...I'm pretty sure that on a busy mall day, when you're parked in the overflow next to the 111, that you'll be soaking wet before you even get to the mall doors if it's nasty out!

I shop at DC all the time. To each his own I guess.

Personally; I've shopped at both Mic Mac and DC when I've been home. Essentially it depends on what I'm looking for and who has the store. For me it has more to do with convenience and routine than anything, I'm a creature of habit.

For example - I use body shop shower gel. We had one in the shopping centre in downtown Calgary until 'the core' started undergoing renovations. I knew of others, but I started going to the one in the NW at Market Mall - because I liked to stop in old navy. Now that the body shop is open in the core again, I've stopped going to old navy pretty much and I'm back to walking down the street.

I never quite understood how people moved away from enclosed malls - I rather like them. Granted, is there 'really a market' or is this a matter of developers telling us how to shop? I mean look at Vancouver and Cambie street? They told developers if you want big box retail - you have to have residential above and they forced them into a new form and it worked well.

True, but at least you have the malls indoor shopping experience to look forward too and knowing you dont have to get wet again until after your done. Also a parking garage wouldn't be such a bad idea for Mic Mac. Maybe even have more retail space above or below it. so its not JUST a big concrete parking box. They also need to put the fountains and tree's back which were removed during the last facelift, or should i say "defacelift". The mall is so bland now

Toys 'R' Us moving to Dartmouth Crossing

The combined square footage and diversity of retail offerings gives the Dartmouth Crossing and Mic Mac Mall areas a huge amount of appeal from a regional point of view, he said.

Some site preparation for the new Toys "R" Us will begin within weeks and an opening is expected sometime in the fall.

The new Toys "R" Us will be built at a vacant site immediately adjacent to a mini-mall that houses a Second Cup, a Henry’s camera store and some other businesses. The store will include a Babies "R" Us component, standard fare in many of the chain’s newer stores across Canada and the United States.

"This store will be significantly larger than the current location at Mic Mac Mall. It’s exciting Toys "R" Us wanted to stay as close as possible to its existing address," said Munro.

"It adds up to a strengthening of the combined appeal of Dartmouth Crossing and Mic Mac Mall as a regional shopping destination," said Munro.

There are about 70 Toys "R" Us locations across Canada. The chain has about 1,500 stores around the world.

The opening date for the new McDonald’s at Dartmouth Crossing was unavailable. The fast-food chain operates a restaurant in the Walmart that is located in the shopping area.

There was no word from the Mic Mac Mall on what will fill the soon-to-be-vacated Toys "R" Us space.
