They're all at least 4-car capable, and those that aren't already capable of handling 5-car trains are currently being expanded to do so. Also, there is no station under EPCOR, so not sure what you're talking about here.

Edmonton LRT paid parking program to start in September

EDMONTON — A planned trial program to offer guaranteed parking at four Edmonton LRT lots is now proposed to start in September rather than next year.

The scheme would see 721 stalls, or 18 per cent of the total, set aside for commuters who buy a $42.53 monthly pass, according to a city report.

Motorists with a so-called “parking membership” would have reserved parking, but not a specific spot, between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays, while handicapped stalls, evenings and weekends would remain free.

The city feels it could sell all the passes for the crowded lots at Clareview, Belvedere, Stadium and Century Park stations, bringing in up to $320,000 a year.

I like this idea, but we need to see some stepped up enforcement in the residential areas surrounding these stations, Stadium in particular. Right now far too many park on the sidestreets and use the LRT, this program could make things aa lot worse

I still think this program is a waste of time. They will only make $320,000 a year, how much will be spent on purchasing passes, enforcing, etc? I see empty stalls in their future, $124 for bus pass and parking is $6.20 a day, might as well drive downtown (especially with the reduced rates from Impark). It will be a huge mistake if they start charging for all parking spots.

More like $2 and change per day. Calgary charges $3/day and most of the lots are full or close to it. Stil way cheaper than driving DT and parking.

Bus pass and parking would be $81.50 + $42.53 = $124.03 per month. Total would be around $6.20 per day.

Edmonton Transit use up by almost 7%

New LRT lines, better marketing expand ridership

EDMONTON — The expanded LRT system and increased marketing have helped boost this year’s Edmonton Transit ridership by two million people, transit manager Charlie Stolte said Tuesday.

The number of passengers was up 6.9 per cent from January to May compared to the same period in 2009, he said after council’s transportation and public works committee meeting.

“That’s in line with what we projected this year … we have seen larger ridership trends over the last four years.”

Reasons for the recent boost include the April opening of two new LRT stations and schemes to attract passengers, such as a program in which ET and employers each pay 12 per cent of staff’s monthly transit passes, Stolte said.

^ Indeed. The implications of the NAIT line, west & SE lines will be huge... Airport, yes... but for the short term a bus will suffice.

Incidently, it looks like the NAIT line is officially u/c

No problem - just go to the main EJ site and there you go!

This is huge. This has implications for the future of ETS and LRT overall. You know what they say, "build it and they will come".

Now if they can get bus service to YEG...

Not sure which part of my post you are asking about... I assume that it is about the NAIT line, as I think we can all agree that the implications for the other lines will be big!

It looks like work has started on extending the tunnel under Epcor, and a bunch of site trailers and barricades are being moved to 105 st

Another example of an essential service that was not fully realized for many years and now the proof is in the pudding. Although I believe that the increasing transit numbers experienced here and elsewhere is part of a larger cultural/lifestyle shift. The next generation of folks are not as 'glued' to their vehicles as previous generatons.

Has the city considered keeping the current stadium station and building a new station between stadium and churchill? Or is the only option being considered right now moving stadium station closer to churchill?

It seems like another station added to the area wouldn't be overkill considering they eventualy want this area to be a urban and dense neighbourhood...

Both, there are consultations and reports being done in regards to slightly moving the Stadium LRT station (800 m towards Churchill) and future plans for another station around 95 street if and when it is needed.

Its so strange that this area hasn't seen more development. Whenever i drive down east jasper avenue i am always surprised how close the stadium is to the river valley. I love how that area kind of has a grand boulevard feel to it. Almost feels like your driving along the ocean (what i like to pretend anyways). I thought that brick building (jasper properties?) would inspire more redevelopment of this area much faster. It seems like this could be edmonton's version of rio's ocean drives along copacabana and ipanema...or for an example closer to home, the road leading to stanly park in vancouver. Not sure how much street level retail would work along this stretch of jasper, but big beautiful condos overlooking our "ocean" ...yes please.

You could probably compare Boyle Street/Quarters to the DTES in Vancouver moreso. You could wonder why it hasn't seen gentrification before with it being right next to the sea and all. For Edmonton, it's partially 1970s plans that ripped down a lot of historic architecture for structures that never came to fruition aside from massive parking lots. That, and there are a lot of social services in the area. The latter is probably why we're seeing the Warehouse Campus/District revitalize first.

Century Park LRT parking saves millions for Edmonton
$15M freed up for roadwork as Heritage Valley lot not needed

EDMONTON — Putting a parking lot at the Century Park LRT station is producing a multimillion-dollar benefit for Edmonton’s transportation system.

The station was scheduled to be served by a regional lot in Heritage Valley linked to the station by a shuttle bus.

But that plan was put on hold after the city arranged last fall to build a temporary 1,230-stall gravel lot beside the station on leased land not yet required for the Century Park condo development...
