We asked the world’s leading architects, critics, and deans of architecture schools two questions: what are the five most important buildings, bridges, or monuments constructed since 1980, and what is the greatest work of architecture thus far in the 21st century? Here are the answers from our 52 respondents, who are listed alphabetically. (Note: some people named more or fewer buildings than requested.)

4)Burj Dubai
5)New York Times Building
6)The Hearst Tower

and the best of the 21st century

Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain (Frank Gehry)
Lloyd’s Building, London, U.K. (Richard Rogers)
333 West Wacker Drive, Chicago, U.S.A. (Kohn Pederson Fox Associates)
Burj Al Arab, Dubai, U.A.E. (Tom Wright)
Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Cesar Pelli)
My choice for the most significant work of architecture created so far in the 21st century:

Orient Station, Lisbon, Portugal - Santiago Calatrava
Twisting Torso, Malmo, Sweden - Santiago Calatrava
Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge, Boston, U.S.A. - Miguel Rosales
Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Ceasar Pelli

My choice for the most significant work of architecture created so far in the 21st century

Taipei 101, Taipei, Taiwan - C.Y. Lee & Partners
