But I think the BC Credit Unions should have stepped up to the plate to raise their name brand awareness. I'm a little tired of the same old corporate names in every city. So we're going to have a Rogers Center and Rogers Place in the country?

I think "Vancity Arena" would have been perfect and I think a smaller company forking up the cash could actually grow their customer base. I can see people favoring the Credit Union over a bank because it's where the Canucks play, but a giant national conglomerate doesn't really have the same appeal. It's like Rogers is spending the money just to annoy the people of BC.

Anyone know approximately how much dough you have to shell out to get naming rights?

GM paid $20 million for the length of the contract. Being that that was quite a long time ago, I'd imagine it would be substantially more now.

Well, a Telus spokesperson has gone on record to say that they're not taking over the naming rights (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2010/07/06/bc-canucks-gm-place-renamed.html)

It'll always be Canada Hockey Place to me, no matter what logo they slap onto it.

Ha! My dreams of 'bulliver Place' will have to go unfulfilled...

Thanks. So just over 1.3M per year...I was just wondering if the price was completely out of reach of some smaller companies. Would be nice to see something other than the huge telecommunications outfits...

Probably not.

Safeco paid about $40 million to have it's name on Safeco field for 20 years. That's only $2 million a year. And Quest Field cost $75 million for 15 years, still only $5 million/year, and I would say Washington is a bigger market than BC (and NFL more than the NHL). AT&T park in SF costs about $2 million for naming rights. United Center in Chicago costs about $1.8M/year. Even the ACC, the most recognized arena in Canada has a 20 year agreement worth only $30 million.

Even the Staples Center (one of the most said names in sports because of the Lakers) is $5.8M/year, and is one of the highest only eclipsed by FedEx Field and American Airlines Center ($6.5M/year).

Rogers Center is called that because Rogers outright bought the Skydome for $25million, about 25% of the original construction cost.

Naming GM Place would not cost over $5 million/year, and I would guess whoever ponies up won't be paying more than $2-2.5 million/year.

People think naming rights generate a lot of money, but in all honesty I don't think the money gotten from naming rights will even cover 1 of the Sedin's contracts.

P.S. the Original GM Place agreement was for $18.5million, but it was to expire in 2015 (20 year term), GM is backing out early. So the ORIGINAL naming rights for GM Place worked out to under $1 million/year.

Interesting, but Molson has its own arena. I say we go with Granville Island Brewing Arena at Xwayxway House. or...Rogers Arena at Xwayxway House. We could nickname it "the sweat lodge"

It certainly illustrates the downside of selling naming rights, especially when a building has born the name since construction. How long will it take before people stop calling it GM Place or The Garage (what will it be now, The Phone?)

Vancouver — Globe and Mail Update
Published on Tuesday, Jul. 06, 2010 1:05PM EDT

Last updated on Tuesday, Jul. 06, 2010 5:08PM EDT

The west coast will soon have its own Rogers Arena.

The Vancouver Canucks confirmed at a news conference Tuesday that the new naming sponsor for the team’s arena is Rogers Communication.

The two parties have signed a ten-year deal which gives Rogers broadcast, naming and wireless rights for the Canucks. This is the first time any company has secured all three sponsorship strands.

It was widely believed that the contest for naming rights came down to two Canadian communications giants – Rogers and Telus. This will now be the second blow Telus has suffered on the sports sponsorship front. The company lost out to Bell to be the telecommunications sponsor for the 2010 Winter Games.

For Rogers, being attached to the biggest and most popular brand in Vancouver would undoubtedly boost the company’s chances of building its profile on the West Coast.

The company already owns naming rights for a major stadium in Toronto – Rogers Centre, home of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Globe has learned that Telus discussed the possibility of taking over the naming sponsorship with the Vancouver Canucks. The domain name registry domaintools.com lists the website url telusplace.com as having been registered by Vancouver Canucks Limited Partnership on January 7 2010.

Telus spokesman Shawn Hall said the domain registration was probably a defensive move by the Canucks in case a possible naming partnership went through.

“We evaluate sponsorships and naming rights for public venues against a set of criteria to ensure good return to our investors as well as our community,” said Mr. Hall. “The proposal they put forward did not meet our needs.

Mr. Hall said Telus will not be the company unveiled as the naming sponsor on Tuesday afternoon.

General Motors of Canada Ltd. and Canucks Sports & Entertainment announced Tuesday that the car manufacturer has given up naming rights to the arena, which has been called GM Place since it opened in 1995. Canucks Sports & Entertainment are expected to unveil the arena’s new name at a press conference at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

General Motors will remain a Canucks sponsor, but will focus its support on “in-arena” activities like vehicle test drives, rink board advertising and wall murals.

“General Motors has been an integral part of our business for many years,” said Victor de Bonis, Chief Operating Officer of Canucks Sports & Entertainment in a statement. “Our home arena has hosted some of the biggest events in the history of our country and we are fortunate that General Motors has been a loyal partner for so long.”

There we have it.

Funny I always kind of forget that rogers owns sports net.

I always just think of them as an over priced mobile phone company.

Yawn.

Rogers is the least BC company out of all the major nationals, ever since they were chased (willingly) out of BC by Shaw. I don't really respect any company that abandons the BC market (for cable) because it gets them an easier time back east. It's like they couldn't have said they don't care about BC any clearer.

I'm actually kind of offended by this move by the Canucks.

I nominate we call it "The Pass". It's kind of a double entendre. We can honor A. B. Rogers for the work he did on the transcontinental railroad, but it mostly means I'll just Pass on the name. (EDIT and it also works for hockey)

Well, we can't call it the "Phone Booth", Winnipeg claimed that one already. "Red Square" may work:

On the bright side, maybe they'll improve their reception within the building

Come intermission time, you can barely even use the internet on your phone, it's so overloaded.

Dreadful. I don't really care for naming rights on privately owned facilities, but Rogers? From the Garage to the Phone Booth.

As much as I hate Telus for their crappy services, I would have preferred them over Rogers. It's local, it's headquartered here.

Rogers already has naming rights over SkyDome, and their red branding would clash against those of the Canucks. On the other hand, the Telus green works with the Canucks and naming it "Telus Centre" has a pretty good ring to it like "GM Place".

One can only wonder what BC Place will be called in a year's time.
