Great screen shots, Deasine, thx for sharing...

I still am cautiously optimistic that evergreen will go thru, especially with this new batch of info released. perhaps this is a bit of brinkmanship on TL's part for asking victoria to come up with funding for the oustanding amount. I think the Libs also have their hands full with HST issues, so i am guessing n august/sept announcement?

That's just Translink fretting, there's nothing new in that article. Around the beginning of June, Shirley Bond said there was going to be an announcement "in a few weeks" regarding a funding arrangement for Evergreen and Translink. Actually, she also mentioned the same thing a couple months ago, but a few weeks ago she said "in a few weeks".

Thanks for posting.

I'm also optimistic that the Evergreen Line will start construction.

In addition to Lincoln, the drawings show a potential West Port Moody Station and one at Falcon Drive, too. The grade is shown as being about 6% near Cameron Street, so no future station there.

Interesting (or strange) that the switch for the Port Coquitlam Spur line would be west of the Coquitlam Central station. i.e. would that mean that passengers waiting on the Coquitlam Central platform would not be able to catch the next train if it is coming from Port Coquitlam (and vice versa)?

The BC Government will be Evergreen Line's Pot of Gold.

Edmonton just got $800 million for LRT, lucky.

Or maybe a platform with connector or a trapezoid shaped platform connecting the two lines.

Maybe its the same config as Lougheed?

A trapezoid platform wouldn't work since it would link platforms headed in opposite directions (i.e. wouldn't work for passengers trying to cath "the next train".

Could be similar to Lougheed, but that would require switches to the east of the platforms - which could be possible, I suppose - these are not detailed track maps. But with this station being near the end of the lines, I can't imagine a need for a high throughput solution like at Lougheed (but then again, if the line goes all the way to Pitt Meadows, with that branch being the mainline ...)

Actually I'm more confident than ever this is coming, and I've been rather negative on the whole thing, but we've had 2 significant news items in the last 2 weeks. First was the stopping/canceling of layoffs, second was yesterday's $180m funding for family doctors. I don't know what the cost was on the first one, but it was a pretty quiet yet important announcement.

Another thing I've observed from the diagram is that they're still pursuing the basket weave instead of the switch option east of Lougheed Station. The location is directly above the current White Spot restaurant.

Maybe they shouldn't do the weave and just travel on the left.

Random, but sort of related, but on Hong Kong's KCR system, which is now operated by the metro company MTR, the Ma On Shan Line, one of their suburban rail lines traveled on the right instead of traveling on the left, like everything else in UK. Their reason was so that it can facilitate a platform-to-platform transfer during the morning rush without making major structural changes. But I just thought it was odd that they decided to have trains traveling on the right the entire time, rather than just creating a pocket track like we are doing here with the Evergreen Line.

In fact, wouldn't those two other spending announcements make you LESS confident about funding being available for Evergreen? Surely the other announcements mean that the limited funds the government has are now allocated to projects *other than* Evergreen...

The legislature is out for the summer. There will be plenty of announcements as the government tries to distract people from the HST. In fact, distracting people from the HST will require even more funding announcements.

No, I think like racc mentioned, it's time to spread the money around. First, the public sector unions (jobs), then families (family doctors), also students (U-Pass), next up, seniors (drug plan?), small business owners (tax break?), then hopefully "lower" income earners (Evergreen).

Looking at the new documents, unless I missed it, I could not see
a mention of a new storage yard. I would have thought there would have
been one along the Barnet Hwy. segment.

I'm glad they appear to be reverting back to the elevated cross-over
near the White Spot (for restoring right hand side travel). This scheme
seems to make the most sense, as the current Guideway near the Lougheed
Station now won't need to be partially demolished.

Reread Post 1701, as per linked.

Good news on the basket weave - I had missed that on the elevation profile. Good eye!

So.....where exactly does Translink plan on keeping its additional trains once Edmonds yard and on-line track storage areas are full?

Well for one, their track storage expansion is not complete at Edmonds. I'm sure there will be a few storage tracks that will be created for the Evergreen Line.

But there are two separate pots of money:

a) Capital costs to build the new Evergreen Line. This needs to find another few hundred million before construction can start.

b) Operations costs to run the Evergreen trains & maintain the new tracks on a daily basis. This cost won't occur before 2013 because the new Evergreen Line would still be under construction until 2014 or 2015.

Translink saying "no money for new expansions before 2013" is likely referring to Operations costs because they expect in 2013 that Evergreen might be under P3 construction, UBC Line will still be under discussion pending a political decision to start construction, and new Surrey lines will still be at the Phase One "What Do We Wanna Do?" discussions.

The opening day ribbon cutting for a line is the day when a new line transitions from the Capital Cost budget to the Operations Cost budget.

I would like some clarification. When Translink says no expansion until 2013, does that mean no Evergreen Line activity or start of construction (ie. completely stalled) until 2013 or does that mean construction could still go ahead and have the finished product after 2013 (in this case 2014)?

nevermind, jsbertram you just answered my question.

"no money for new expansions before 2013" is pretty misleading. I hope you are right though.
